A Demographic Analysis: The Idaho Falls, Idaho Metropolitan Area

Demography is the science of human populations and their change over time, and the United States Census reveals important demographic changes decade-by-decade that affect politics, government and public policy. One of the most important demographic trends is that the U.S. has become a far more multicultural and multilingual society than it was in 1960, due in part from changes in the immigration laws in 1965 that abolished the quota system of the National Origins Act that favored European immigrants. As a result, Asians and Hispanics have been the majority of new immigrants over the past forty years and states like California and Texas already have majority-minority populations or soon will have. At some point in the 21st Century, the U.S. as a whole is going to become a majority-minority society for the first time in its history. Another major demographic trend is the rapid growth of the over-65 population as the Baby Boom generation begins to retire, which will mean heavier expenditures on federal entitlement programs like Medicare and Social Security. Elderly voters are also the most politically active group, especially when protecting these key safety net programs, and this has become a major political and public policy issue in recent years.

In my research of Austin, Texas I found out several interesting facts regarding the demographic makeup of the city. For example, the racial breakdown by race is whites 68%, blacks 8%, Hispanic are at 35% and foreign-born 18% The makeup is obviously different when you compare Austin to the US as a whole, however, it is interesting to see the “total picture”. The following is the breakdown for the US whites 72%, black 12.6%, Hispanic 17%, and foreign-born 13%.

Brindlee Mountain Middle School is a small rural school in Marshall County Alabama located within eight miles of Guntersville, Alabama and Arab, Alabama. BMMS was constructed sixteen years ago to consolidate Grassy and Union Grove junior high schools. This consolidation led to the reorganization of Grassy and Union Grove into elementary schools serving grades kindergarten through fourth grade. In 2004 Brindlee Mountain High School was created, followed by another reorganization of Grassy and Union Grove elementary schools into a primary school serving grades kindergarten through second grade and an elementary school serving grades three through five. In 2011, Union Grove and Grassy schools underwent another transformation when they were renamed Brindlee Mountain Primary School and Brindlee Mountain Elementary School respectively. These changes successfully created the Brindlee Mountain feeder pattern.

The racial segregation between Worcester Metropolitan area and the Albany-Schenectady-Troy, NY metropolitan area is very similar. For both of the area, it shows that White-Black, White-Hispanic, White-Asian, Black-Asian, and Hispanic-Asian have a moderate level of segregation. Black-Hispanic have a low moderate level of segregation in both of the areas. The segregation of poverty and of affluence is greater in the Worcester Metropolitan area than it is in the Albany-Schenectady-troy, NY Metropolitan area.

The first neighborhood Hartigan describes in his study is Briggs. The demographic and population size of Briggs changed over time since 1930 from 24,000 residents that were 99 percent white to less than 3,000 residents that are over 50 percent white, 30 percent black, and 10 percent Hispanic (Hartigan 1999). Hartigan explains that the reduction of white residents was known as the “white flight” that occurred as the neighborhood changed overtime. Despite the drop in white residents, they still comprise the majority, which contrasts the demographics of Detroit as a whole (83 percent black, 11 percent white, 7 percent Hispanic/Latino, and

The prevalence of the races in Dakota County follow close to the United States data in relation to the most dominant and least dominant races found. The only discrepancy that stands out, is the difference between the percentages of Caucasians in Dakota County and in the nation. This notable difference is due to the lack of Latinos/Hispanics and African Americans in Dakota County which is described by the table. With a less culturally diverse population, which appears to be filled with cultural capital, the digital divide may not be heavily influenced by the racial composition in Dakota

Clarksville Tennessee is a city that is made up of one hundred and forty thousand five hundred and sixty three people. That makes Clarksville the fifth largest city among others in Tennessee, and it is constantly growing (infoplease.com). The diversity amongst the population is recorded at just under sixty seven percent Caucasian, just under twenty three percent African American, and just over two percent Asian. The socioeconomic status of Clarksville’s population is varied through all strata of the spectrum. Of the seventy six thousand five hundred and eighty one Clarksville residents who are over the age of sixteen there are fifty four thousand six hundred and eighty currently in the labor force and twenty one thousand nine hundred and one not currently in the labor force. Clarksville’s population comprises of thirty six thousand nine hundred and eighty seven households whose yearly income can be defined between twenty five thousand and thirty four thousand nine hundred and ninety nine dollars at six thousand three hundred and sixty eight households, fifty thousand to seventy four thousand nine hundred and ninety nine dollars at seven thousand two hundred and eighty four households, and one hundred and fifty to one hundred ninety nine thousand nine hundred and ninety nine dollars at only two hundred and fifty six households. Race, income, and education have shifted the demographics of my community, Huntington Park, in the past years from 1990 to 2010. In the 1990’s there was no particular social class dominating my city; the median income was $62,500. In 2010 however, my city was made up of working class individuals whose median income was about $37,651. The departure of whites contributes to urban decay in my community just as Hunter’s observations showed, where low working class came and made up the majority of the population and lived in “extreme poverty and seemingly ever-present violence (Hunter).
