The time that George and Lennie where around it was a difficult time in America, on page 5 they went to Murray and Ready’s and got work cards and bus tickets because they didn’t have cars so they would of had to walk or take buses anywhere they where going in today's America a lot of people would think of that as unbearable . If you had to live like Lennie and George had you would have to almost depend on the bus or you wouldn't be able to get to job to job every month or sometimes into town. Another reason it was a difficult time in America, at the time was there was not the best health, on page 18 when George and Lennie got into the bunk house on George's bed was a can of “Positively kills lice”. On page number 3 Lennie drinks a whole bunch of water out of the lake these days people …show more content…
Also, if you were not wealthy then you wouldn't be cared for as much for example if curley had shot Lennie it wouldn't of been as bad for him compared to shooting someone that is rich. Another reason it was a difficult time in America it would've been even worse if you had no one to travel with you. On page 35 Slim talks about how not many people travel together, George says “it's nice to go around with someone you know”. Another reason is was a difficult time in America, Lennie was lucky to have someone there for him to help him and these days people can just call someone or text them when they feel lonely but back them they couldn't do anything about it if they didn't want to live with the person they wanted to talk
I had a text to self connection at the end of the book when George killed Lennie, and that was when someone or something gets to be a burden or is a bad influence sometimes you have to cut ties for the greater good of you as a person. I here all the time to stay away for people that don’t help me as a person grow and when Lennie killed Curley’s wife he no longer could be considered innocent. For the safety and good of others George cut that tie. In the circumstance George took it upon himself to do it in the fashion he did but in our day to day lives it looks
some may argue George shouldn’t have shot him since they were companions. In chapter three slim and George talk about how Lennie is traveling around with George. Slim says, ‘“funny how you an’ him string along together”’(steinbeck 39) to George. Slim thinks Lennie and George's Friendship is unique. since most most migrants during the time period 1940's they usually traveled alone. From always traveling together George and Lennie have Built up a strong bond. However, Lennie had to die down because he was destructive. In chapter three Curley and Lennie have a heated conflict. Curley says to Lennie “‘Come on, ya big bastard. Get up on your feet. No big son-of-a-b is gonna laugh at me”’ (Steinbeck 62). Lennie after being hit over and over again, lennie grabs Curley’s hand and Breaks
In the 1930’s itinerant workers were migrant workers who travelled from land to land to find jobs, any occupation available to allow them to fend for themselves and survive in the disastrous world, they were living in at the time. We know George and Lennie are migrant workers due to the period of time the novella is based on. It was a catastrophic world as it was when The Great Depression occurred, unemployment and recession increased vigorously. Bearing this in mind, the way in which Steinbeck’s first description of George and Lennie, at the
The novel, Of Mice and Men, talk about different characters and how things were back in the Great Depression by following two ranchers, George and Lennie. When the novel first introduces the setting at the lake, it also introduced the two main characters. George is described as the one that seems to take in everything with his “restless eyes and sharp, strong features” and Lennie follows him. Lennie is described as “a huge man, shapeless of face, with large pale eyes, with wide sloping shoulders;” George and Lennie look like opposites which draws the question, Why are they traveling together? The answer becomes clear once we get into the novel but before that, Lennie starts to drink the scummy water and plays like a toddler in the lake. This shows that he has some mental disability and this is further shown when he starts to forget everything. His disability foreshadows trouble which shows that Lennie is the one that causes the most trouble because of his mental disability to forget everything, how he isn’t wanted anywhere, and how his disability ultimately ends up ruining dreams and lives.
Living a nomadic life was another reason behind their failure. They were never settled as they were always looking for a better job. Lifestyle like that made them very selfish because they didn’t get paid enough. Lennie gets out of control towards the end of the novel and kills Curley’s wife while ‘petting’ her unintentionally which was another reason for the failure of their dream. George and Lennie’s struggle for their little American dream is best summed up by crooks when he says “seen hundreds of men come by on the road an' on the ranches, with their bindles on their back an' that same damn thing in
Will racism ever come to an end or will its path go on infinitely? For the most part, the majority of people respect those who are different either in color, race, and/or heritage; however, there are those few that hold bigoted views towards people who are different than they are. The movie American History X by Tony Kaye displays an example of people who hold bigoted views. Derek, a Neo-Nazi leader, must contend with his actions relating to his past racist views and actions. This powerful movie explores its characters thoroughly and gives reasons why people become so callous and turn towards a racist group. It also exposes insight to problems that plague America when it comes to racism in
We live in a world of dreams and desire to achieve, but sometimes we end up without achieving them. Therefore, Steinbeck brought this clearly as we see Lennie died without actually achieving his dreams. Also friendship has been expressed as the main theme in the novel. Despite the difficult moments they went through, George and Lennie’s friendship is all against the challenges. The two shared well dreams and loved one another so much. This is a great virtue even in modern
On Christmas Eve in 2010, my grandmother received a gift from a hospice nurse who was assisting with my grandfather’s deteriorating health. Initially both surprised and embarrassed by the gesture, her emotions quickly changed once she removed the wrapping. A single package of Ramen Noodles was revealed. Embarrassment changed to confusion as she attempted to wrap her mind around what she had received. The hospice worker drove a 1997 Plymouth Voyager that she regularly complained about not being able to run properly for more than a week. She wore old worn out clothing and my grandmother claims she had never seen the woman wear jewelry before. It was evident that she was not wealthy. Although she could not afford a gift, the nurse in her
George started this novel with a dream of living an ideal life with Lennie. “We’re gonna live off the fatta the land,” he’d say. He wanted to go somewhere off the grid with Lennie so that they’d both be safe and not have to worry about other people or Lennie getting in trouble. He wants to escape the harshness of the world
Defining what really is to be an American does not sound as easy as it seem. It will always be complex process. As immigration continues to fuel the growth of the population of our nation, racial and ethnic gap increase and evolve along with it. Racial and ethnic identities become more and more convoluted and difficult to understand. Race and ethnicity continue to intermingle and push a cultural shift in the US– a shift that plays a significant role in redefining America in a day-to-day basis.
I am the first generation of Americans in my family, even though my father is an American citizen, but I grew up in China. Chinese language and cultural is one of my uniqueness. This trait influenced me the most was my first year in America. The only academic course that I felt confident was math. I never need help in math, I finished all the classwork and homework at class, I got full score on the exam, even with the state exam in FL, I got 5 out of 5. However, other courses, such as science, English, history, I felt powerless. Often, I was sitting on class, but didn't understand anything about it. At the beginning of the English course, I understood most content, because I learned them in my past six years in China, but when facing the second
The United States of America is a melting pot of various cultures, who wish to obtain one goal, the “American Dream”. Being an American means one is guaranteed by law to have natural rights, which are life, liberty, and property. In the government’s eyes, one must become a legalized citizen in the United States, to be considered as “American”, but there happens to be a deeper reasoning to be truly recognized as an American. Americans are seen equally, which allow most individuals to be successful in what they want to pursue. Many Americans show patriotism towards The United States of America by celebrating national holidays, and going to patriotic events.
Many of Americans today do not take the time to realize that our nation is little by little falling apart. Our leaders are corrupt, our environment is being destroyed, and there are thousands of children being born each day. The three major social problems facing the American citizens in the 21st century are births to unmarried woman, being able to trust or government and or leaders, and lastly destroying the environment.
Lennie’s mental problems are what get him in trouble and force him to rely on George for the basic necessities of life. Crooks’ skin colour keeps him separated from the rest of society and causes him a great deal of anger. The feelings of loneliness that most of the characters feel makes them intrude onto other people’s relationships in an attempt to find some form of companionship. The hardest part about seeing the struggles that Steinbeck presents us with is that we see people struggle in the same way
The United States of America is a very unique country for numerous reasons. One particularly good reason is our great cultural diversity. Weaved deep into our history are the tales of people traveling overseas to the New World looking for better lives. Of course, not all these tales have happy endings (or happy beginnings, or any happiness anywhere in some cases), but regardless, learning about our nation’s migratory history is very important. Immigration is a very serious topic of discussion in today’s heated political climate; whatever your stance of the issue may be, it’s handy to have some knowledge of the subject, as it could affect your opinions on it in a substantial way. We should discuss where and why immigrants came to our shores, how legislators have tried to stop them, and what impact they’ve left on our country today.
