Over the years it has been said that a dog is a man 's best friend. A friend that has been domesticated ever since the beginning of time, bringing about many different breeds throughout the world from Affenpinscher to Yorkshire Terrier. The connections received from these loyal animals have proven to be a huge benefit physically, emotionally, and socially. It is no surprise that we have trained dogs to perform complex tricks to entertain the public or train them to save lives. Dogs that are trained to assist people with disabilities such as visual impairment, post traumatic stress disorder, diabetes, seizure disorder, mental illness, and mobility impairment are called service dogs. However, certain dogs have been excluded as service dogs because of being labeled as the “dangerous breed.” Some dangerous breeds should not be excluded from being trained to do the same job as other breeds that are considered safe breeds. A service dog is a regular everyday dog that was trained to perform tasks to help people with disabilities. People already feel that there are only specific breeds such as Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, or German Shepherds that can be service dogs. However, this is not factual according to the Fair Housing Act. “Breed, size, and weight limitations may not be applied to an assistance animal.” (U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development).
