During my reading of the short story "A Good Man is Hard to Find", it took me back to the setting and time of the movie, “O Brother, Where Art Thou?”. Understanding that the movie and story have different plots, the three men are what stands out to me, minus the killing. With that, the literary device that I will reference will be the character. The static character device that refers to a “good” man in the story is The Misfit. The stock character device that refers to a “good” woman in the story would be the Grandmother. Now, to break down the question of what does it mean to be a "good" man or woman? Through the short story, the Grandmother talked way too much, very opinionated, racist, obnoxious, and annoying. According to the quote by
If you were to ask someone what their definition of a happy life would be, they would probably give you an answer like, “having fun.” This is completely untrue in Aristotle’s terms. According to Aristotle, for a man to lead a happy life he must learn each of the intellectual virtues, and practice each of the moral virtues throughout his life. These moral virtues are justice, courage, temperance, magnificence, magnanimity, liberality, gentleness, prudence, and wisdom. With so many virtues to constantly abide by, a man cannot know if he has led a happy life until his life is nearly finished. In the story “A Good Man is Hard to Find,” by Flannery O’ Connor, the question is

The term “a good man” is usually referred to it as a worthy person that has done a marvelous deed. A person look can be deceiving and it is very difficult to know whether that person is generous or malicious. In a short story, “A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor, the audiences are focus primary on the grandmother interactions toward The Misfit, a wanted criminal. The story is set to be in one big irony about a family vacation from wrong. Within the short stories, "A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings" and "A Good Man is Hard to Find" there are several areas of both similarity and difference. The differences are not hard to spot between these two stories. The family that the story surrounds has planned a trip to Florida for a family vacation. Knowing but unconcerned about the criminal at large, also known as the Misfit, the family voyages onward towards their destination until the trip is abruptly stopped by a totally unnecessary exploration down an unkempt, hilly and dangerous road. The dangerous road combined with the unsuspecting attack of the driver from the grand mothers cat, Pitty Sing, lands the family in a ten-foot deep ditch and in need of help. The
I firmly believe that people reap what they sew. In the story, “ A Good Man Is Hard to Find,” the grand mother is a prime example of this scenario. Her pathetic ploys and acts of deviance cause harm to the family throughout the story and it ends up coming back to her in the end. You can tell that harms is inevitable for the family by some of the clues that are found in the grandmother’s
In “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, Flannery O’Connor uses the two main characters, the misfit to and the grandmother, to emphasize and personify the good and evil perceived within each character. Each one of the main characters displays both characteristics of good and evil, and while they might initially be viewed as one or the other, neither character can be seen so black and white. O’Connor uses these two characters to show how two characters can demonstrate such contrast and difference of good and evil traits, while also, having some of thosesame traits in common with each other. The story titled, “A Good Man is Hard to find” demonstrates a typical scenario of a carjacking incident whereby family members are left shell shocked by the turn of events. The Misfit in this case is the offender with Bobby Lee used as the perpetrator of the crime because The Misfit argues that he is a good man, only prison made him change that stance. In any case, whatever happens to the Grandmother’s family has got no major relation with people being either good or bad. It is just a family group that had varied opinions and in this case as well, they had divergent views on what was actually transpiring. In the following sections, will demonstrate how the events that led to the executions of the family members are believable in this case.
You are sitting in your living room at home watching the nightly news. The lead story for the night is about a family of four that were murdered. After seeing and hearing about something like that we often ask ourselves, What could possess a person enough to kill another human being? What is it that drives a person to kill? Will we ever know? Many authors use this unique mentality in short stories. They write about what the killer thinks and how he/she acts on his/her thoughts. He was in the Federal Penitentiary for killing his father. Throughout the story O’Connor builds up this killers mentality
On the other hand, in "A good man is hard to find" the grandmother is a person who think she is superior to the all other ladies. She wears a dress and hat, which per her is the most essential thing for a lady's virtue. She criticizes others, she passes judgements and she never wants to be wrong. She is a hypocrite, dishonest and a selfish person. For instance, O’Connor has mentioned in the essay about the grandmother remembering an old plantation was nearby

The grandmother believes to be greater than the people that she are around because of the “good” that she portrays.
