The short story, “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, written by Flannery O’Connor, depicts the story of a family – A mother and father, three kids, and a grandmother – as they travel to their vacation in Florida. On their way, they're met by an escaped convict and killed. O’Connor utilizes various writing tools to translate a message about life and the struggle of good, evil, and faith. O’Connor uses characterization, as well as foreshadowing and irony to translate her message. “A Good Man is Hard to Find” is told in the third person, but our main character focus is on the grandmother. When she first appears in the story, at the beginning, you can immediately tell of her stubborn nature. Throughout the story, it is clear she is also deeply paranoid, self-righteous, and stuck in the past. O’Conner uses the grandmother’s personality to guide the story with much foreshadowing and irony. The grandmother immediately protests traveling to Florida, advocating to instead travel to Tennessee, where she would visit some old friends (O'Connor 1). This displays her stubbornness and unwillingness to move on from the past. She tries to discourage her family from going to Florida by telling them of a dangerous, escaped convict headed for Florida (O'Connor 1). This …show more content…
She encourages him to pray and insists that he is a good man and would not shoot a lady. He replies by telling her of his family and explaining how his current plight came to be. In the quote above, he gives some insight into his mind and his reasoning. He doesn’t deny Jesus’s existence or His actions, but nor does he state he believes it. He seems to be struggling with what he believes, as he seems to believe in Jesus but acts as though he does not. On the other hand, the grandmother says she has faith and is telling The Misfit to pray, yet does not show so in her actions. In this way, they both act contrarily to their beliefs, very
The short story A Good Man Is Hard to Find by Flannery O’Connor is filled with suspense and has a chilling plot line. The story can be split into three sections, the beginning, middle, and end. O’Connor uses foreshadowing early on and in the middle of this story, making the reader infer the doom that is about to happen to the family. In these sections there are moments of foreshadowing and repetition that essentially prepares the reader for the climax. All three of the sections work together to tell the story of the family’s trip to Florida.
Murder of women, children, and even a baby is a harsh image used by Flannery O’Connor in “A Good Man is Hard to Find.” The imagery is an effective literary device used to convey ironic tragedy, the struggle of female characters, and the family unit. The story follows a family on a trip to Florida when their journey, interrupted by an ill-fated detour resulting in a car wreck, ends in murder after they cross paths with an escaped convict. Family dysfunction, female struggles, and tragedy are common themes in the stories written by Flannery O’Connor, and her characters often referred to as grotesque. In her story “A Good Man is Hard to Find,” she
Flannery O’Connor’s short story, “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, centers around a vacationing family of six. When the father of the household attempts to take the family to Florida, their trip is derailed by the grandmother’s desire to visit her childhood home. The grandmother leads the father down a back road in a heavily wooded area and at one point a wrong turn is taken and the family ends up crashing into an isolated ditch. After attempting to signal for help, the family is murdered by a wandering group of escaped convicts. The three most important elements that the author uses in this story are the elements of setting, characterization, and style.
As the family is getting ready to head out to their desired destination, the grandmother brings up a newspaper article about the Misfit in attempt of changing the family’s destination instead of wanting the family to be safe and happy. Her selfishness and able to manipulate others in order to achieve what she wants is demonstrated through that small part of the story. Also, she makes a great effort to look well-dressed even though her family is dressed casual. She mentions that “In case of an accident, anyone seeing her dead on the highway would know at once that she was a lady.” She is dressed in her best outfit, as if she were going to meet the lord which is ironic since before the day is out she will actually meet the lord. Having a suitable and ladylike appearance mattered more to her than anything else, even her own life. Despite her personality, the grandmother has important contradictions of her character. From her references to Jesus, the bible, and praying, it appears that she thinks of herself as a Christian
"A Good Man Is Hard to Find" is a short story written by Flannery O’ Connor that was published in 1955. The passage mixes elements of both Southern Gothic literature and suspense to unfold a dark, moralistic narrative. The story is an ironic tale that follows a pessimistic grandmother who is traveling with her family down south to visit Florida. She is unsettled by the news of a recent escape convict escape and tries to convince the family by changing course but to no avail. The strong use of foreshadowing present in the story is a tool used by the author to build tension as the readers follow the passage. Events soon transpire for the worse after a car accident which was ultimately caused by the miss care of the grandmother occurs. From this
Theme is the big idea of the story, and the theme of “A Good Man is Hard to Find” revolves around Jesus. Religion is the ultimate deciding factor of life and death in the end. To save her life, the grandmother brings up Jesus to the Misfit and during the confrontation the reader realizes that Misfit has thought more about Jesus than the grandmother. The grandmother states that Jesus did raise the dead; however, she later agrees with Misfit that Jesus, in fact, didn’t raise the dead. The misfit says that he wasn’t there so he doesn’t know what to believe and he shoots the grandmother three times in the chest. Misfit believes there is no pleasure in life due to his reaction to the biblical allusion. The Misfit’s distant relationship with Jesus helps him believe that their is no point to life, and no real right or wrong.
Flannery O'Connor's "A Good Man Is Hard to Find" has been critiqued over the past sixty years since its first release in 1953. It is the story of a manipulative, unnamed grandmother whose personality led to the demise of her entire family on their vacation to Florida. She endeavored manipulated her family to vacation in Tennessee, and attempted to manipulate The Misfit into not hurting or killing her, in which, she failed both. The grandmother's form of manipulation is persuasion.
Picture this: three children, two parents, a grandmother, and a cat walk into a barbecue joint. This sounds like the beginning of a hilarious joke; however, it is the start of a devastating family vacation. Written by Flannery O 'Connor in 1953, “A Good Man is Hard to Find” portrays wrongful humor and violence through the use of symbolism and imagery. Looking closely at the story one can see the grandmother’s dress, the six gravestones, and the woods, just to name a few, all symbolize and foreshadow the families inevitable end.
“You wouldn’t shoot a lady, would you”. By her asking that, she also shows how self centered she is because she’s only worried about herself and not her family, not even the children. This also shows that she believes her appearance as a “lady” is more undeserving of being killed than the others. “There was a secret panel in this house” she said craftily, not telling the truth, but wishing that she were, and the story went that all the family silver was hidden in it when Sherman came through but it was never found..”. This shows she is a liar, and she will lie just to get her way. She is a hypocrite, because she tells the Misfit to pray about his situation, but she cannot do it in her own situation and chokes up. The grandmother had said, “Well why don’t you pray”. O’Connor tells us, “She wanted to tell him that he must pray. She opened and closed her mouth several times before anything came out”. She also is inconsistent, when the Misfit tells her Jesus might not have raised from the dead, she goes along with him, showing lack of faith, “maybe he didn’t raise the dead”. The

Flannery O’Connor’s short story “Good Country People” depicts Hulga, a highly educated woman and has a PhD, is being jerked around by an immoral bible salesman. “A good man is hard to find” is a story of a grandmother and her family murdered by a horrible man who called “the misfit” during the road trip. Grandmother begs for her life and urges the Misfit to pray. The Misfit snarls at this suggestion stating that "Jesus was the only One that ever raised the dead, and He shouldn't have done it. He thrown everything off balance" (1041). As the grandmother begins to doubt her faith in God, the Misfit suddenly shoots her. Quite ironically the Misfit says, "She would have been a good woman, if it had been somebody there to shoot her every minute of her life" (1041).
In the short story A Good Man Is Hard to Find, written by Flannery O’Connor, the theme that the definition of a ‘good man’ is mysterious and flawed is apparent. The reader must realize that it is difficult to universalize the definition of a good man because every person goes through different experiences. Thus, these experiences affect his or her viewpoint and in turn flaw ones view on a good man. O’Connor conveys this theme through her excellent use of diction, imagery, foreshadowing, and symbolism as well as through a creative use of repetition and an omniscient point of view.
In the short story while the grandmother is speaking to the Misfit about how he handles his diversity, she would tell him things like “That’s when you should have started to pray” which shows how incorporated religion is into the grandmothers life and behavior (O’Connor 383). The Misfit says many things that help support that he is ant-Christ, including “Jesus was the only One that ever raised the dead,’ the Misfit continued, ‘and he shouldn’t have done it. He thrown everything off balance.” (O’Connor 385). “She would have been a good woman,’ the Misfit said, ‘if it had been somebody there to shoot her every minute of her life”, “Some fun!’ Bobby Lee said.” “Shut up, Bobby Lee,’ the Misfit said. ‘It’s no real pleasure in life” O’Connor 385). Finally, to wrap up the story the Misfit is given the role of
