Her breath rushed out in ragged gasps as she searched for a place to hide on the giant ship. She couldn’t go back there, not again. Going back meant that they had won, and she couldn’t let that happen, even if she had to change her name and move to a new state. She hurried through the shadows of the ship as quietly as she could, all the while listening for any evidence that they were chasing her. Having lived with her sailor grandfather, she knew how to walk while the ship was moving, but the rain was making the slick floor even slicker, and making it difficult for her to catch her footing. Finally finding a small row boat to hide in, she began to hear numerous footsteps coming from the opposite side of the deck, and she tried to control …show more content…

She was able to pick up two or three different accents, but each one seemed to know the language fairly well. As she listened, she realized that her heart was racing, and she was afraid that she might faint from the fear. Staying as still as she possibly could, she tried to pick up any words she might understand, but they were all talking so quickly that she wasn’t even sure which language they were using. After two or three minutes of furious chatter, a new figure emerged on the deck, and spoke very quietly, seemingly giving them orders to quit pursuing her. She watched the figure approach, and realized that it was the captain of the ship, and also her original captor. The crew began to fade into the darkness of the ship, leaving the captain and the one she assumed was the first mate. They both spoke rapidly, giving her no chance to catch what was being said, but she was sure that they were trying to figure out where she might have gone in the storm. They finished talking, and followed the rest of the crew into the darkness, giving her a chance to try and get away from the ship. She got out of the rowboat, and walking as quietly as the wet floor would allow, went to the side of the ship, and slid over the edge into the ocean.
