There is humanly no possible way to merely or easily define what “freedom” truthfully is, as every distinct person and each social order has opposing restrictions for what this belief is. Bureaucrats and social researchers, for example, have vastly diverse philosophies of what institutes freedom. This primeval belief has been ingrained into mankind since the beginning of time. Century after century mankind has fought in numerous wars for this concept of “Freedom”.

Freedom is the right to act, think, speak and write without fear of punishment or coercion. I feel that living in a civilized society ensures freedom because a civilized society has laws to keep everyone 's rights safe, our government is a democracy since we were once under a tyrannical government, and it keeps order. Three famous writers known as Henry David Thoreau with Civil Disobedience, Niccolo Machiavelli with The Qualities of a Prince, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau with The Origin of Civil Society wrote about a civilized society versus a tyrannical government. Sometimes their views agreed with mine and other times they did not.

Having freedom is what makes the people who they are as humans, and what they are meant to be. What is freedom? Freedom is the state of being free without any confinement mentally or physically. It is the liberty from any external control or any restriction from the simple things in life. Africans were free before the Europeans started sailing across the ocean. The Native Americans were the original slaves in the United States but they were dying rapidly. The Europeans settled in the United States and started to rape the Native Americans women, killed the weak children and forced the men to work endlessly on the fields (Carson 1991, p.6). What do we need freedom for? in my opinion, we need freedom to make a great impact on our lives, as kids, and adults. What is freedom? in my opinion, freedom is supposed to be allowed to do what we want when we want. Freedom is not just like that there is rules to freedom, like laws.

First, what is freedom? It's an ambiguous term that can hold many different meanings to different people. Where a person comes from, their socio-economic status, their race, age, gender and other factors play a role in defining what freedom is. Freedom means living life as one wants, everything else is a form of slavery. If a person is not allowed to make his or hers decisions, if he or she is not free to live life as he/she wants than he/she doesn’t have power over his or her existence. It’s our freedom to vote, no matter our race or gender, our freedom to love whoever we want, no matter our sexual orientation, our freedom to express ourselves, and most importantly the people who fight for our basic freedom, to make all of these other freedoms possible.
