In Boy’s Life they come out and say it when the author says, “I ran out along the corridor, my arms unencumbered by books, my mind unencumbered by facts and figures, quotations and dates.” This shows you upfront the boy was very happy to be free. However, his education brings him hope. Not only does Douglass read of abolition, giving him hope, he also learns the importance of his education. Mark Twain told his story of being a boy who wanted nothing more than to work on a steamboat in Life on the Mississippi.
