We all have a story, we all go through tough things in life. We can relate to a lot of things and we find out that were not so different from other people. The memoir A Long Way Gone and the film The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete have a lot of similarities and differences. Even though they live in two different places, they are very similar. One similarity would be that they are both struggling alone. They both have their parents but the boys are going to learn how to survive alone without them. They are two young black boys ages 12 and 13 that live in poverty. They become independent throughout their stories. Another thing that both Ishmael and Mister can relate to is drugs. Mister can relate to this because his mother also did drugs. Mister’s mother could barely take care of herself so of course she could barely take care of her son. When Ishmael left his home so he can be safe, he had some company and so did Mister. Throughout the book, every village that they would get to, one of Ishmael’s friends would be killed or left behind. With Mister, he had Pete by his side the whole time. Mister actually took care of Pete more than himself. Another thing that Ishmael and Mister can relate to is the feeling of when one of their relatives or a close friend gets sick. They were both desperate when they could not do anything to help. Ishmael’s uncle got sick during the war and Ishmael was taking a risk. The risk was that he would go to the city and get food for his uncle. Mister also did the same thing. He would steal from the stores. He even got lucky when he started acting with the employer and telling him why he need so much food. One more similarity would be that Ishmael and Mister were both taken to a place to “help” them out. Ishmael went to rehab and Mister went to foster
A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier and the recent 2006 film Blood Diamond both depict how it was living in Sierra Leone, Africa during the Civil War in the ‘90’s. While A Long Way Gone focuses on child soldiers and what they had to live and go through for many years, Blood Diamond focuses mainly on how the country is torn apart by the struggle between government soldiers and rebel forces. The film portrays many of the atrocities of that war, including the rebels' amputation of people's hands to stop them from voting in upcoming elections. Both the movie and the book try to tackle major issues by asking the questions: how

Ishmael Beah, the author of A Long Way Gone and Art Spiegelman, the author of Maus, both have an important war stories to tell to our generations. In Maus, we see a family portrait complicated by the legacy of the Holocaust, the bond of families are tested between Vladek, the survivor of the Holocaust and his son Artie, who is ultimately affected by the Holocaust as it reverberate through future generation. In the film, police came to search the apartment. Mister and Pete hid as they do not want to depart to Riverview, the children's home. Every day, the two boys are avoiding the police or running from them. They must buy their own food, take care of their home and one another. Mister steps up and tries his best to provide and care for Pete, although being thirteen years of age, he cannot yet acquire a job. In the memoir, Ishmael and his friends are driven to do everything they can to avoid the rebels or they could be in danger, possibly killed. They end up only going out at night so that they will not get seen as easy and be as quiet as possible. Ishmael is a leader,
Before reading “A Long Way Gone,” I was not at all familiar with the civil wars occurring in Sierra Leone. I didn’t know anything about Sierra Leone’s political dynamics either, however I could infer much about what might be going on there if asked. At least that is what I thought. That is until I read part of Ishmael’s memoir. I figured, previously to reading the memoir, that civil wars began as a result of some generally good reason, and were continued for a generally good reason. The civil wars in Sierra Leone, as I read, were quite the opposite, rather blind fight for power, as narrated by Beah, “A lot of things were done with no reason or explanation.” It is also implied that each side in the war believed that they themselves were doing

There are many similarities and differences between A Long Way Gone and Beasts of No Nation, but one of the biggest similarities was the war in these foreign countries. In both stories the two boys live very similar lives; fun childhood, war breaks loose, loses their childhood and faith in their humanity. Both boys describe the wars as a horrific experience and are both forced into rehabilitation camps. In Beasts of No Nation we only see Agu living through the war and really what ends up on him and most boy soldiers who have faced such terrible things. As we know Beah from A Long Way Gone gives the reader a look at what it takes to get someone integrated into society again, and even then no one can never be returned. It is much like a used toy. After fifteen children have used it, it can never return to its original brand new state, of course it is easy to care for it more and keep an eye on it but tha can’t make it new again. Humans who have gone through traumatic
“Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything. -Plato” Music is as a light of hope for Ishmael Beah, when he is placed in these life or death situations. Music plays a big role in most of everyone’s lives. Music can cheer you up, it can get you excited, it can calm you down, and in Beah’s eyes it can save your life. I use music in my everyday life to to cope with my stress, and play music that corresponds with my mood. In some parts of our world, music is their culture. As Santana’s song says, let the music set you free. In the book A Long Way Gone, Beah’s music plays a big role in his survival and displays his innocence when he was still a kid.
A Long Way Gone is a raw, honest depiction of war and violence, but it is a unique autobiography written by Ishmael Beah. Ishmael (at the age of 12) had an ordinary life with his

In today’s society the majority of the crimes are still being committed by people who have possessed a firearm that has been obtained illegally or without proper permits. That being said there has been a strong push for gun control because of the rise of shootings involving a large group of people such as the Columbine massacre, Virginia Tech shooting and latest Aurora movie theater shooting involving people who have purchased firearms legally. Gun control laws in the United States have been established for many years but to maintain a civilized society with limited crime stronger control laws need to be enforced in which will help reduce crime in our country. Establishing stronger gun control laws will educate
