A quote from Shakespeare’s play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, says, “Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind. And therefore is winged Cupid painted blind,” (I, i, 234-235). This quote means that when you’re in love, it should be about personalities and not looks. Helena‘s quote applies to five pairs of lovers in the play. The first pair of lovers that this quote applies to is Hermia and Demetrius. Demetrius ‘loved’ Hermia because he thought she was beautiful. He had no idea about what her personality was like or what her beliefs were because he was too distracted with her beauty (II, ii, 59-61). He truly thought he was in love with her, but he was never in love with her as a person but rather as an image. The second pair of lovers
This quote is very important because it is shown throughout the rest of the play. Shakespeare shows this quote throughout the relationships that develop between Lysander and Hermia also with Demetrius and Helena. Other Couples in the play experience some sort of problem with their love. Titania and Oberon for example, love each other but are not faithful to one another.
The play A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare, published and edited by EMC Publications and Laurie Skiba in 1998, is about foolishness and reveals that love can make a one blind, thus causing them to make a fool of themselves. Consider the quote, “Take not her part. For if thou dost intend. . . show of love to her, Thou shalt aby it,” (Shakespeare 51). This conversation between Lysander and Demetrius shows they are so blinded by love they will fight each other for Helena’s love.
Love has no thoughts, and chooses people blindly without any second thoughts or judgement. As Helena says in the play, “Love looks not with the eyes but with the mind; / And therefore is winged Cupid painted blind. / Nor hath love’s mind of any judgement taste.” (1.1.240-242).
Midsummer Night’s Dream mainly depicted the baffling journey of four Athenian young lovers, and a frivolous group of actors who unwittingly interacted with the Duke, Duchess, and somehow fairies. Being that the story took place in an eerie forest in Athens, there was a fight betwixt the fairy king himself and his lovely wife Titania, which had an impact on the environment. To win back the devotion of his wife Oberon showed her how fortuitous she was by making her fall in love with a weaver who was transformed into
“"You simply cannot control other people's thoughts or actions and you can't even necessarily control your own thoughts and feelings... All you can do is make your choices of what you do with your life and what your actions are and sometimes when you do let things go and you're more passive or more active” (Tobey). What this quote means is that no one has control over other people’s actions and that you can only control yourself, you should allow things to happen on their own and they shouldn’t be forced. The play, A Midsummer Night's Dream tells the story of Athenian’s, Fairies and Mechanics. Egeus who is Hermia's father tries to control her by making her marry Demetrius when she loves Lysander. Hermia refuses to marry him and runs away into the woods with him. In the same woods, they escape there are two groups of people, the, and mechanics. The Mechanics are a group of craftsmen who are rehearsing a play to perform for a wedding. The king fairy Oberon and his servant, Puck put potions on the Athenian’s, Mechanics and
There are lots of different types of love in the world. Tender love, obsessed love, ardent love, oppositely sided love, just normal love, and so on and so forth. One of them, blind love, is defined as loving somebody so much so that you cannot see their faults and also defined as love that can overcome many barriers. In Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the four young lovers show that love is blind.
Steven: After Lysander and Hermia leave for the forest. Demetrius leaves to chase after Hermia, and Helena follows him because she loves Demetrius. Lysander and Hermia get tired after a while, and decide to rest. Puck then arrives to execute his plan, but he puts the juice on Lysander’s eyes instead of Demetrius’s by mistake. Lysander then later wakes up, right as Helena and Demetrius arrive.
“Though she be but little, she is fierce!” With this statement, William Shakespeare’s character, Helena, depicts Hermia in the play A Midsummer Night's Dream. I, conversely, will use this statement to introduce the country of Luxembourg. The Central Intelligence Agency’s World Factbook affirms that Luxembourg is located in Western Europe and is geographically landlocked, as it is bordered by the countries France, Belgium, and Germany (The World Factbook). The Encyclopedia of the Nations states that Luxembourg is one of the smallest nations in the world with an area of 2,586 sq km, which is slightly smaller than Rhode Island- the smallest state in size of the United States of America (Encyclopedia of the Nations). Misunderstood Intentions? Puck a scheming, troublesome and mischievous servant fairy of Oberon who is not that good at listening. All throughout William Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" Puck seems to be at fault for most of the characters' problems. However Oberon is the person who requested for Puck to carry out most of these tasks, Puck is the character that blatantly mistakes Lysander for Demetrius, puts the Ass's head on Nick Bottom, and forced Lysander to hate Hermia for a while.
“Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind; And therefore is winged Cupid painted blind.”(I.i.240-241) In this quote from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, love is referred to as being blind. In this popular comedy by Shakespeare, Lysander loves Hermia and Hermia loves him back. Helena, whom is Hermia’s best friend, is in love with Demetrius who used to love her,but now loves Hermia. Egeus is Hermia’s father and strongly prefers Hermia to marry Demetrius, although she does not approve. Egeus seeks the help of the Duke of Athens in order to force his daughter into marriage with Demetrius. Love causes the characters of this play to shut out anything and everything besides what they want. The four lovers in this play, Hermia, Helena, Demetrius, and Lysander find themselves trapped into situations due to their love preferences. In a Midsummer Night’s Dream, the main theme of the story is that love is blind and can take you on a journey of many unexpected turns.
Mandy Conway Mrs. Guynes English 12 16 March 2000 A Critical Analysis of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" William Shakespeare, born in 1594, is one of the greatest writers in literature. He dies in 1616 after completing many sonnets and plays. One of which is "A Midsummer Night's Dream." They say that this play is the most purely romantic of Shakespeare's comedies. The themes of the play are dreams and reality, love and magic. This extraordinary play is a play-with-in-a-play, which master writers only write successfully. Shakespeare proves here to be a master writer. Critics find it a task to explain the intricateness of the play, audiences find it very pleasing to read and watch. "A Midsummer Night's Dream" is a
This scene begins with the fairies putting Titania to sleep. They sing her a song and once she falls asleep Oberon comes to the sleeping woman and puts the nectar in her eyes, although it does not occur in this scene the nectar causes Titania to fall in love with Bottom.
Love is a term used daily in one’s life. Many categorize love in many forms. These forms differ from one-another such as the difference between love for food and love for one’s spouse. However, in the play; “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, love takes different forms than the ones experienced in reality. One can classify the different types of love used in this play into three different categories; true love, love produced by cupid’s flower, and the state of lust.
A Misummer Night’s Dream is a comedy play written by William Shakespeare. In this play there are multiple themes however the most evident theme is love. Why is love an evident theme? It is an evident theme because the play commences with two Greek mythology characters─ the Duke of Athens, Theseus and Amazon queen Hippolita planning their marriage. However as Theseus plans his marriage he has to help Egeus persuade his daughter Hermia to marry Demetrius. Unfortunately both the Duke and Egeus failed to persuade Hermia into marrying Demetrius so the fairies (another set of characters. The fairies in this play consisted of goddess of chastity and Queen of fairies, Titania and King of fairies Oberon and his assistance Robin Goodfellow) decide
The story of A Midsummer Night's Dream was mainly about love and its abnormal dealings. In the play, Shakespeare tried to show that love is unpredictable, unreasonable, and at times is blind. The theme of love was constantly used during the play and basically everything that was said and done was related to the concept of love and its unpredictable ness. Shakespeare made all of the characters interact their lives to be based on each other’s. At first, everything was very confusing, and the characters were faced with many different problems. In the end, however, they were still able to persevere and win their true love, the love they were searching for in the first place.
