A quote from Shakespeare’s play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, says, “Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind. And therefore is winged Cupid painted blind,” (I, i, 234-235). This quote means that when you’re in love, it should be about personalities and not looks. Helena‘s quote applies to five pairs of lovers in the play. The first pair of lovers that this quote applies to is Hermia and Demetrius. Demetrius ‘loved’ Hermia because he thought she was beautiful. He had no idea about what her personality was like or what her beliefs were because he was too distracted with her beauty (II, ii, 59-61).
