Lyrical Love – Emotions That Transcend Centuries
The play within a play of of Pyramus and Thisby is a display of poor acting by the rude mechanicals near the end of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. Moreover they provided an insight into the major themes of love within the plot. This form of entertainment can also be seen in popular culture of today through the use of of music videos. A concert within a video plot, and what remains the same are the themes of love which have survived the test of time. This paper will relate these themes of love within “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” to popular music of this era in order to show that love truly has no boundaries.

Oberon and Puck plot to use the love juice to have Demetrius fall in love with Helena, however, this becomes botched and chaos ensues. When the wrong people begin falling in love other themes are brought to light, jealousy and mistakes. This is shown within the play when Hermia confronts Helena for being in love with Demetrius and Lysander when [Hermia] says “O me! You juggler! You canker blossom! / You thief of love! What have you come by night / And stol’n my love’s heart from him?” (3.2.282-84). This lashing out at her friend Helena provides us a glimpse of what jealousy can make people do when they do not have all the information. As Hermia has angry words with Helena the thoughts of both Demetrius and Lysander can best be summed up in the lines from the song ‘Spellbound” :
If looks could kill then I know she would
She's playing the part, you know it's understood
I know the second glance was my first mistake
I took the chance that I had to take
