Elective 1 Movie

Winthrop University Elective 1 Movie The film I decided to watch was, A Mile in His Shoes which was directed by William Dear and screen wrote by Frank Nappi and Jason Koornick (2011). This movie was very inspiring as an adult with Asperger’s syndrome is the main character. Asperger’s syndrome is a type of autism that is more of a social disorder (Gargiulo, R. M. & Bouck, E, 2018). These individuals have trouble in social situations whether that is making friends or just talking one on one with a family member. There are many characteristics that describe an individual as having Asperger’s syndrome. Most of these characteristics were displayed throughout the film through the character Mickey Tussler. In this paper, I will discuss the signs and symptoms of Asperger’s syndrome through the eyes of Mickey, a professional minor league baseball player as well as how he was treated by his parents, coach and teammates. I will lastly reflect on how I felt about A Mile in His Shoes regarding their portrayal of Asperger’s syndrome. Mickey grew up on a farm helping his mom and dad raise and feed the animals. He did not have much of a social life as his parents took him out of school as they felt he would not succeed in the general education program. Mickey is working on his GED which is briefly mentioned in the movie, but is a big accomplishment. Growing up, many social workers and school psychologists have come and gone,
Asperger’s syndrome is becoming more and more common as time goes by. Each year, more children are being diagnosed. This paper focuses on Asperger’s Syndrome and developing social skills in various social settings. By looking at the etiology, diagnostic procedures, how the condition effects development, daily challenges, current social/cultural views, and relevant social interventions, a better understanding on how to develop social skills for children with Asperger’s Syndrome can ensue. The world revolves around social situations. This is how people are hired for jobs, ask for things, make new friends, meet their future spouse, etc. At the moment, social skills training and social support is minimal compared to where it potentially
Thesis Statement: Despite the common misconception that Aspergers is a disability, Christopher Boon demonstrates that the syndrome provides him with distinct advantages.
In the article, “How to Speak Asperger’s,” by Fran Goldfarb and Guthrie Devine, the authors contend that learning to communicate with people with Asperger’s Syndrome is an important skill. The authors introduce the article by providing a narrative about Goldfarb’s son. The point of her narrative is that communication is misunderstood with people with Asperger’s Syndrome (AS). The author, Fran Goldfarb, explains how her son misunderstands communication with his teachers, and how punishment is ineffective, because of his Asperger’s. The authors start by explaining why communication is very complex. To begin with, people with AS struggle with communication, because of their lack of social cues. They tend to miss irony, humor, and they take everything literally. That’s why people with AS don’t understand communication and everything is a struggle for them.
Approximately 947,570 Americans have Asperger’s Syndrome (AS), however, it is not an easy disorder to explain (Bashe 19). With multiple conditions and characteristics in each case, AS is not an easy disorder to diagnose. Asperger’s Syndrome was named after Hans Asperger, an Austrian physician, who first described the disorder in 1944 after studying a group of children with similar, unusual characteristics. However, AS was not made an official disease until 1994. Consequently, Asperger disease is just now becoming published and popular so there is still research and questions being answered. Asperger’s Syndrome, an autism spectrum disorder, is noted by above-average
In life nothing shapes you like your environment. This is true when it comes to the characters of
Mickey was a very humble and caring individual, he did not like all the publicity he received, not because of his shyness, but because he never thought of himself as some kind of superhero or someone who was the best at what they did, he always kept it in the back of his mind that there was someone working twice as hard as him to be the best. Mickey never accepted the fact that what he did was good enough. Even these last few months he gave it all he could possibly give.
Another trait he observed in the four children was that they had a certain interest that they were obsessed with in a sense and it dominated their conversations with other people. He called the condition “autistic psychopathy” he said it was a personality disorder that’s main symptom was social isolation. Asperger’s wasn’t widely known until 1981. Children with Asperger’s (AS) will get a huge amount of information about whatever their favorite subject is. These people who have AS aren’t able to always control the volume of their voice based on the environment surrounding them, e.g., libraries, movie theaters, etc. Also, a wide selection of children with AS are very active as young kids. But then as a young adult they begin to be depressed or anxious.
Michael Henry Schwerner (Mickey) was born November 6 1939 Pelham, New York. He was born into a Jewish heritage. His mother was a science teacher and his father was a business man. He was described as a “friendly, good-natured, gentle and full of ideas” kind of guy. He was the most kind of gentlemen you could meet. He always cared for others and always tried to help those in need. Mickey originally went to school to become a veterinarian at Michigan State but then transferred to Cornell University become proficient in Rural Sociology. Mickey later became a Social worker. In 1961 Mickey got is bachelor’s degree but unfourtnally he didn’t get to finish before he put his heart into justice for African-Americans.
The relationship between Asperger syndrome and autism has been a controversial topic in psychology. There is not a definite correlation which has been decided upon between the two and chiefly due to the fact that they are both overly similar. Concisely, psychologists seek to identify the main difference between them. In a simpler way, it is not yet clear whether autism and Asperger syndrome should be defined as independent (distinct) terms, or whether Asperger syndrome should be categorized under the wider realm of autism. In their researche, multiple scholars have come upon differing opinions and theories in support of their own perceptions of the two disorders which either agree or disagree at some point. Asperger syndrome is derived from Hans Asperger who is highly recognized for his efforts in defining the disease which many scholars had described as not diagnosable (Mayes, Calhoun & Crites, 2001).
This work is built around a topic that is sum interest to me due to the incidence of cases within the different social fields. It 's a syndrome whose classification is relatively new and as such requires a comprehensive approach for a better management of the condition. Asperger 's disorder owes its name to Hans Asperger who was the first to discover a group of children with traits very particular, mainly characterized by the absence of empathy, reduced ability to social relations, solitary conversations, a deep attachment to a special interest, and clumsy movements. However the person who presents it has no alterations in the appearance, in its capacity of intelligence and often displays skills in restricted areas. This disorder
In the book The Kite Runner, Khaled Hosseini writes about the life of a boy in Afghanistan named Amir. Throughout the book Amir experiences unfortunate events that causes the reader to question whether he is a moral person. Driven by his guilt, he longs to redeem himself leading him to do selfish things. Although Amir may begin a self-centered person he is still a good person. Amir always feels regretful when hurting others and also soothes people when he recognizes they are upset.
Have you ever assumed what people might be from how they look or the last action they preformed? Most people can assume that of Amir, a character who is presumed a selfish person who cares not about what happens in other people's lives. Amir is the main protagonist in the novel ¨The Kite Runner¨. A renowned Afghan man named Baba is his father, and a hazara boy named hassan is his best friend/brother. The antagonist is Assef who creates many problems for Amir all throughout his life. Amir appears to be a morally ambiguous character due for the acts of his childhood and adulthood.
Amazingly, one percent of new births will have some type of autism (Autism Society of America, 2010). Asperger’s disorder is one type of Autism, and is at the high end of these disorders. This “disorder, which is also called Asperger's syndrome (AS) or autistic psychopathy, belongs to a group of childhood disorders known as pervasive developmental disorders (PDDs) or autistic spectrum disorders”(Exkorn, 2006). A characteristic of this disorder is harsh and strict disruption of a certain type of brain development. The most affected areas of Asperger's disorder is difficulty in social understanding and in behavior or activities that are limited or recurring (Frey, 2003). Students with Asperser’s have different levels of seriousness,
I just watched the Movie “The Accountant” with Ben Affleck. He does a great job portraying a adult who had a bad case of Asperger’s. They do portray him in a good light as he is the hero in the story and you root for him. I believe after watching that movie people will see kids that have Asperger’s in a different light. IRIS has you look at a picture and write a biography of this lady in the wheel chair. I did leave out hobbies and extra circular activates in writing my biography. I still believe I have a bias even after looking at the picture and going through this video and this video. Resources helping people with disabilities graduate are plentiful. Encouraging, enabling, and empowering them the things they need to complete degrees and productive and self
One of the main aspects of this movie is how these people with Asperger’s Syndrome and Autism deal with relationships. The support group was formed by Donald because he had no friends and no social life. The people in the group enjoy being around people like them and who are accepting of their eccentricities. This illustrated how difficult it must be to not only have a disability, but one in which there is such difficulty in understanding other people and relating to them. I work at Reedley College, and I have often seen groups of students from our Workability III program spending time together during lunch, or in the same campus club. I think they seek each other out because they have experienced similar issues with social acceptance, and because they feel they can be themselves without feeling uncomfortable. The message conveyed about friendship was both positive and negative. People with disabilities seek friends and emotional support just like everyone else. The positive message is they found each other to provide that support. The negative aspect is they had to seek each other for that
