A New Chapter It was a frigid afternoon in mid February. As Judy sat on the crowded bus, just a couple seats away from the door; she realized that the next stop was hers. Judy dreaded as she stood up and got out of her seat. A unsettling feeling filled Judy’s mind, a feeling like someone might have forgotten something. She didn’t know what it was, but she sensed something wasn’t right. She quickly stopped and turned around to check and see if her siblings were coming too. She already knew that her younger brother Mark was already off of the bus. While she looked to the back of the bus, she noticed Donna, Mary, and Carol finally standing up and heading towards the front. As the wave of relief hit Judy, she finally walked off the bus. While Judy ate the jello slowly, she savored every sweet bite; and pondered at what might be wrong. She looked around the diner to see if anything was out of place. She carefully scanned her horizon. All red and jet black booths were still present, the carousel they had in the far left corner was still on the stage area shinning bright. The candy display was still full of the arrangement of gum and taffies seemed to be untouched, which was abnormal for the time of day. As Judy sat there puzzled, the manager had come out from the back room looking concerned. The heavier set middle aged woman leisurely walked up to Judy and her siblings; at that moment she knew that her feelings of uncertainty were right.
The short dark haired woman stopped and stood right in front of the counter she let out a huge sigh. Not knowing what could be wrong, Mark had asked where his mother was and if she’s in the back working. The manager stood there with both of her hands clasp together, thinking of what to say next. A few minutes had passed which seemed like hours, but finally the woman said the worse possible news that any of Judy or her siblings could have heard. “Your mother collapsed today, while working this morning about two hours after you all left for school.” Those were the words that had shot a splintering pain into Judy’s body. She continued, “Your mom is in the hospital right now, and your aunts Mary and Bernie are coming by in about 20 minutes.” Shocked
