The recent rise in awareness has brought the concept of income inequality to the forefront of American’s minds; however, this is certainly not a new phenomenon. The United States has struggled with income inequality since its birth 241 years ago; the much bigger issue today stands within the mentality of greed that has developed in recent time. While income inequality has existed since the nation 's birth, the looming threat to societies wellbeing is the emergence of a mentality of greed that has grown unbridledly in recent decades. America’s capitalist economic system has made the institution of income inequality as American as baseball, cheeseburgers, and pick-up trucks. Donald Trump also sees obstacles as mole hills rather than mountains but in an albeit less shrewd way than Hearst. When told that Mexico was not willing to pay for his southern border wall, his response was “the wall just got 10 feet higher!” (source). (Insert quote about Hearst starting war here). Hearst enjoyed the finest things in life and bought and built grand monuments to his wealth all over the world. The list is far too long to detail but highlights include a castle on long island that F. Scott Fitzgerald used as his inspiration for Gatsby’s mansion, an h-shaped mansion in Beverly Hills that the Kennedy’s vacationed in and can be seen in The Godfather, a quintuplex (5 story) penthouse apartment in New York City, and a massive castle complex in San Simeon, California that sat on a piece of property half the size of Rhode Island overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Donald Trump also enjoys monuments to his wealth and has a number of significant properties like high rises around the world, golf clubs, hotels, and the now infamous Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach. Much like Donald Trump, William Randolph Hearst was born into privilege. Hearst’s father was a successful mining millionaire and kickstarted his sons career by giving him the San Francisco Examiner in 1887 (source).
