A Nurse 's Role Model For Healthy Behaviors

Compassion, commitment, courage; three words that I would associate with the role of being a nurse. By going into nursing I believe that I will be able to make a difference, even changing one life for the better is far more rewarding than anything I could ever imagine. I have always admired the role nurses play in the lives of so many, not only patients, but also the families of those in their care. I believe that it is essential for a nurse to be able to listen and communicate with not only their patients but also those around them.

As a course of life, people are born, raised, and go to school until the time comes where they need to make a decision about their career. In fact, most careers have one common theme among them---Help or give back to community and society. I for one have chosen a career in nursing to help people and give back to my community. Other than the fact that I want to help people, a career in nursing will expand my horizons, give me career opportunities, and job satisfaction.

My philosophy of nursing comes directly from my desire to help people. I want to be a nurse because I enjoy being around people in their times of need and I get internal satisfaction by serving those that need help. I remember when I did some volunteer work for a hospital and that is when I realized my passion for nursing. I believe that the cure for many of the people's ailments is not just in medicine, it is in the care that they receive as patients in hospitals and their homes. This is where I believe that I can make a great difference in people's lives by helping them recover from their ailments.

I choose nursing as my future career because I enjoy working with others, helping others feel better, and educating people. These three topics are all involved in what nursing is. I believe that nursing is focused on the holistic care of individuals and their families in order to achieve and maintain an optimal level of health, a great quality of life, and comfort. This is done through the promoting healthy living, providing a safe environment, preventing illness, and the caring for the individual and the family.

Nursing philosophy is defined as a nurse or students thought of what they believe to be true about the nature of the profession of nursing and to provide a base for nursing practice. (2016, para.1) The nursing field continues to develop into a professional scope of practice and nurses continue to work to develop a high standard for the profession. The values and skills that nurses’ learn as they care for patients continue to develop into rules and regulations for future nurses. As a nurse it is important to create the best environment for patients, family members and co-workers. After graduating from high school I obtained my STNA and then began my college career in the health field as a physical therapy major. This past year I transitioned to nursing after seeing how much more I am able to work directly with patients. The reasoning behind my nursing philosophy is that I have gained knowledge and love for the profession through working as a certified nurses aide for the last four years. When I became a nurse I wanted to be the best nurse I could be. I have encountered many different types of nurses. I have seen nurses who do the bare minimum and some who go above and beyond for their patients. I wanted to be like the nurses who went above and beyond for their patients because of that patient satisfactory and bond that you can get when you take the time to listen. As you precept with different nurses of different levels of expertise you take in to perspective of how you think a nurse should be or strive to be. I have had different nurses who approach nursing in different ways but in the end the outcome is the same which is we want what is best for our patients.

The greatest aspect about nursing is that it is never going to be just a job and is even more than a merely profession. Instead, it is a belief system or way of life and not a discipline that can simply be practiced then abandoned to the dictates of a time clock. To simply say that “I love people” or want to “help people get better” does not demonstrate the drive behind this feeling. Articulating my philosophy is not an easy task, to better explain my philosophy of nursing, I am going to use some values that I have learned. These tools truly explain how I feel and what has motivated me to pursue nursing as a career.

I knew I could be a nurse when I watched blood ooze from my brother’s face. His eyes dripping tears, and body shaking from being scared, he did not know what to do. I however, did not flinch once when I wiped the blood off his small face and hands. He was just two and I remember thinking how I had to fix him. In fact, there are several reasons why I chose nursing as my profession. First and foremost is that I want to focus on changing people’s lives (Nurse Journal, 2016). As a nurse, I would study the life's value when I would be seeing individuals struggling to remain alive. Since I am fully aware that each life's breadth is a gift, I would, therefore, understand this lesson further as I would be nursing various patients daily. I greatly respect human life, I possess strong values and I am compassionate for empathy and suffering, factors that have further attracted me to the nursing profession. Second, nursing profession allows continuous learning. As I like learning, I would possess unlimited opportunities for advancing my medical knowledge. There are certain characteristics that are very important of being a nurse. Becoming a nurse means to take value of the craft and work. A nurse should see this, as a “calling” and not a typical job that people usually do not value. I chose this major because I like to help people. I chose nursing because I want to save lives. I’m interested in nursing also because of my mom. My mom has a lot of health conditions include diabetes, fibromyalgia, asthma, and gastritis. I help my mom on daily basis with her conditions. I love helping my mom. To me, being a nurse is far more than a job or even a career. It's an adventure, a continuous learning process that I embark on bravely each day, in search of life changing events and miracles. I consider myself to be a compassionate person who genuinely enjoys helping people, to positively impact people's lives by making a significant difference while achieving a lifelong dream, because of its endless variety and finally, I believe this is the best career path for me.

I chose to be a nurse because this allows me to interact more with people. Nursing is a great profession; it allows people to influence and touch lives. I am willing to obtain this significant responsibility. I am keen to be there for the patients through illness, injury pain, loss, grieving, birth, growth, aging, and health. I consider myself as determined and vigorous. I have the desire and determination to accomplish my goal of being a nurse. I am also thoughtful, caring, and open. I believe that my desire and traits would reflect on me being a nurse and would make me successful one.

Urgency of acute care varies depending on the situation but can range to anything from emergency surgeries, to injuries, chronic illnesses, and also for the recovery of those procedures. Majority of the patients in acute care settings are critically ill. Nursing responsibilities in acute care settings are vital to patient’s recovery due to the front line position nurses play as well as the wide variety of tasks carried out. Assessments are made during every encounter the nurse has with the patient along with monitoring the patient’s progress. Nurses are responsible for recognizing symptoms the patient may be experiencing due to illness or injury and whether they fall in the spectrum of normal reactions. Vital signs are measured routinely and can be indicators of the patient’s current status. When vitals are questioned diagnostic tests can be arranged to further assess possible comorbidities the patient may have. Care plans are made to plan interventions the health care team can take to help patients through challenges they face, both physical and mental. Nurses administer medications as well as first aid as needed. They are responsible for maintaining special equipment patients may require including monitors and ventilators are well.
