An Explication of A Passage From Heart of Darkness
In this passage from Heart of Darkness, Marlow provides a synopsis of his story to his listeners on the Nellie before he begins his story. Since Conrad is telling a story within another story, he is writing in frame narrative. Conrad wrote in frame narrative to provide context to the readers so that they can understand the moral of the novel. The audience can have their own perspective of the story rather than the storyteller’s point of view. The story seems more accurate and non-biased since the story is being recalled by the narrator, not Marlow. Marlow starts with, “’I don’t want to bother you much with what happened to me personally… yet to understand the effect of it on me you ought to know how I got out there, what I saw, how I went up that river to the place where I first met the poor chap.’” (Conrad 6). This indicates that Marlow is ambiguous about him being the subject of the story. Even though Marlow asserts that he does not want to talk about his personal life, he actually wants to tell his personal story to his audience. He wants people to listen to the story so that that can spread his message. This was Conrad’s approach to explore certain themes and reveal the truth about imperialism.
