Through my practicum experience involving the triage system, instruction of clinical nursing, and creation, implementation, and evaluation of triage scenarios at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center Emergency department, I developed useful knowledge and gained valuable and practical skills that helped to build a strong foundation for myself as a nurse educator. The following discussion details my practicum experience with regards to what could be considered the highlights or most important components. The beginning of the practicum involved learning about the analysis of peer-reviewed research literature, especially with regard to the effectiveness of education centered on case-based scenarios and the use of ESI triage algorithm. By reading and reviewing these articles I gained knowledge with regards to triage systems, and also acquired insight into how this knowledge contributed to my development of critical thinking skills and will contribute to my practice as an effective nurse educator. The literature reviewed gave me a more detailed understanding of evidence-based practice and familiarity with the triage system. This first provided me with a good foundational basis of knowledge upon which me later experiences within the practicum were grounded.
