In A Place Where the Sea Remembers, Sandra Benitez invites us into a mesmerizing world filled with love, anger, tragedy and hope. This rich and bewitching story is a bittersweet portrait of the people in Santiago, a Mexican village by the sea. Each character faces a conflict that affects the course of his or her life. The characters in this conflict are Remedios, la curandera of the small town who listens to people’s stories and gives them advice, Marta, a 16 year old teenage girl, who was raped and became pregnant. Chayo is Marta’s big sister and Calendario is Chayo’s husband. Justo Flores, his conflict is person vs. self. One of the most important conflicts in this story is person vs. person, then person vs. supernatural followed by …show more content…
Chayo still thinks the curse is there after four years. Marta takes care of her own child, and learns how to deal with the fact he came from a rape but in the end there is a twist of fate. Remedios has seen Marta’s future. She knows that her child is going to die; she sees this when the boy was in his mother’s womb. The conflict of person vs. person begins with Don Justo Flores. Each day he goes to the beach where people beach pay him to see his birds perform tricks. Don Justo is a lonely man but he has a story. He had two wives and five children, including Justina, his first, and Ernestina, his fifth. Suddenly he receives a telegraph; he suspects it is bad news but he cannot read. He hopes the telegraph is from Justina saying all is forgiven. So as he walks on the beach as usual, he finds a girl named Rita and asks her to pick her fortune. Don Justo asks the guy next to her to read him the telegraph. The guy tells him it is bad news after he reads, “Come home at once, papa Justina is gone from us.”(A Place Where the Sea Remembers, Sandra Benitez, p. 108) So he gathers his things and goes to town for tequila and he blames himself for not being a good father and not being there for Justina when she was a little girl. He remembers allowing his second wife to push Justina out of the house; he cannot stand the pain. Whether we like it or not, conflict is a part of everyday lives. It can happen to anyone, from your friends to your family.
In, A Place Where the Sea Remembers, several events take place to describe the little city of Santiago, Mexico. This town is just south of the border by El Paso, Texas. The book focuses around a lady known as the Remedios. She is a very old healer that helps people with their problems of love, hate, etc. She is the "good" in the book, whereas El Brujo, the warlock, is the bad man in the book. This book's other strong point is that it has several short narratives that focus on one, or a few citizens of Santiago. A few examples are, Candelario (the salad maker), Marta (16 year old that's pregnant), Fulgencio (the photographer that loses all of his equipment) and Don Justo Flores
Novels are written with a hidden meaning behind it and it is the readers’ duty to decipher the point the author is trying to get across. Sometimes novels are all a writer has to express themselves and have some sort of outlet for their beliefs or ideals. In Sandra Benitez's novel, A Place Where The Sea Remembers, illustrates how ideologies consumed by society contribute to the oppression of women. When looking at Benitez’s novel in the feminist critical lens, it reveals the underlying patriarchal society that the characters live in and portrays how that affects how men treat women and how women treat women.
We deal with conflict everyday. Whether it is a kid at school that you just can't stand, or a family member. Heck, it may even be a random stranger at the store and he took the last LEGO set that you wanted. Whoever it is with it is still conflict. And when you get conflicted, you don't handle it too well (don't lie to yourself, everybody does it). When people are angry at one another, they want to show that they’re mad. This doesn't just happen in real life though. Conflict and reactions are shown throughout our culture. It can be a book, movie, picture, or even history. No matter what, conflict is all around us, and how we deal with it is very important.
First, Marta has to deal with many kinds of loss. One thing Marta lost was her dreams for when she grows older. She lost this when someone committed a heinous crime and brutally raped her at a beach. On the day she was raped, she became pregnant. When she became pregnant, she lost her freedom, and loosing her freedom made her lose her dreams. She had a big dream which is shown when Marta said," Her dream was this: once the baby was born, once she had turned it over
Conflicts are a part of everyday life, and sometimes solving them is not the easiest. Some conflicts are between people, or even countries. In My So-Called Enemy girls with varying views spoke their opinions face to face, and led to the end of their personal conflict. Undoubtably the best way to solve these problems is to work it out face to face. Face to face interactions form a connection between two people, which lets them share their emotions. People often say that the best way to solve a conflict is to leave it alone, and eventually it might sizzle away. I believe that if you were to leave a conflict alone, as soon as the conflict is brought back into fruition, a larger conflict will ensue.
Conflict is something that has been around since the beginning of time. People always think of conflict as a bad thing, but it can be a good thing. Conflict has changed history. Not for the bad but for the good.
Occasionally, conflicts can appear to ignite and to increase like a wildfire, acting as a destructive raging force with a mysterious, and later forgotten unknown cause. On the other hand, it does not have to be that challenging or complicated to understand. Many conflicts can be traced to some primary areas of life, such as individual needs and desires. Understanding the way conflict begins can assist to successfully navigate and finally resolve it in professional and personal relationships. Concerning value and political barriers, conflict takes place because there are profound divisions in the society that have interpersonal associations. There are
Conflict is a recurring aspect of life and it will never be avoidable. With conflict, people are able to express themselves and their beliefs. Conflict has and is shaping our country for the better. Because of conflict, people are able to be more free with their opinions. These are some reason why conflict causes more good than bad.
Conflicts are present in our everyday lives, some big and some small. The degree to which they impact our relationships largely depends on who is involved and what each party’s expectations are. Conflicts can either go onto a constructive or destructive path depending on how the parties involved handle the given situation or problem. I am currently experiencing a destructive conflict with two of my roommates and that is what I will be focusing on for this critical analysis paper. Folger, Poole, and Stutman (2013), define conflict as, “the interaction of interdependent people who perceive incompatibility and the possibility of inference from others as a result of this incompatibility” (p. 4). Using this definition, I will break down my current conflict in order to describe and analyze it using a variety of concepts and theories.
Everyone faces conflict in their lives on a daily basis. It is an accepted and expected part of life. Conflict is not a problem in itself - it is what we do with it that counts. You can't avoid conflict in your life, at home, at work, and even at play. Wherever people interact, there is a potential for conflict. That is not bad news because good things can arise, and relationships can improve through conflict, provided conflict is managed with thought and attention. The bad news is that most of us are fairly limited in how we manage and resolve conflict situations, often throwing gasoline on the fire. It doesn't have to be that way.
Why is it that people are getting in arguments for nearly everything? There are minor and major conflicts that occur in our world today and a variety of ways to resolve them. Looking at a few real life scenarios will help us learn how to mediate conflict.
Conflict in the area of communication is a facet that has been accepted since the beginning of time and will continue to affect majority of lives around the world. There are many reasons as to why certain people may deal with conflict better than others, but most
While conflict is a part of social relationships, there are many conflicts that are escalated beyond the normal day-to-day interactive conflicts. Day-to-day interactive conflicts such as disagreeing about what to cook for dinner or when to mow the lawn are inevitable and for the most part, relatively easy to negotiate. However, more serious conflicts arise during the course of daily living as well: in which religion to raise children if parents come from differing ideological backgrounds or how much to spend on family vacations. Daily living and conflicts within the family are not the only conflict, however. Conflicts at work, in social situations, in political debates, and in global issues create tension in daily life as well. Both
People come across conflicts daily as humans and rarely agree with each other. Conflicts arise due to how an individual views something that happened; an action that took place or even a statement or opinion that is expressed.
While a variety of definitions of the term “conflict” have been suggested and improved over time, this paper will use the
