In this essay, I will be discussing the role and function as well as the main features of the mosque in the Muslim community. The word mosque is defined as a ‘Muslim place of worship’. It is very important in Islam because it is the place where Muslims humbly face their lord, prostrate to him and ask from him. Muslims gather in mosques to pray their 5 times daily prayers in congregation. This is a symbolism of Muslim unity and brotherhood. It also symbolises equality as every person is the same, no one is superior to another. In the prophet’s time, the Masjid was the place most visited by the prophet and his companions. As well as amplifying the Muazzin’s voice, the dome helps echo the prayers around the Mosque. The dome is very important and is found on top of most Mosques, it helps distinguish a Mosque and symbolises the unity of Muslims. It also symbolises the beauty of Islam, as it is the colour of al-Jannah and the people of Jannah will be dressed in green. The Prophet (S.A.W) was also reported to have been seen wearing two green garments which means it was a liked colour by the Prophet. Figure 1: The dome of Masjid-e-Mahmoodiyah This Masjid also consists of a minaret which is a tall tower, this provides a visual cue to the Muslim community and it is from here that the Muazzin calls the people to prayer; it also acts as a reminder to the people when it is time to pray. Masjids are the houses of Allah; therefore they should be kept clean at all times. Muslims ensure this is done by removing their shoes and placing them on the shoe rack provided before entering the sacred part of the Mosque. Every Masjid consists of a prayer hall. This is the main area of the Mosque in which Muslims gather in congregation to perform Salah. Masjid e Mahmoodiyah has spacious prayer halls which are always kept clean as Muslims should pray Salah in a pure place. There are chairs in the prayer hall to accommodate for the elderly and there are also tasbih’s so that Muslims can do Zikr in between prayers. This Masjid also has a Mihrab
