A Presentation On The Issue Of Children

On December 6th, 2014, I had the opportunity to give a PowerPoint presentation on the issue of “Children in the Fields” to the youth group (and a few other members) of my local church in Wendell, NC. There was a total of about 20 people there, ranging from ages 13 to 30 years. As youth president at my church, I was given the responsibility of looking for current events and/or issues to present to the youth, so that they can learn to become informed citizens and learn the importance of volunteering and advocating for a specific cause. As a result of taking this course, which has allowed me to be aware of the issues and injustices surrounding farmworkers, I decided to give a presentation on an issue that is very near and dear to my heart—children in the fields—and because I considered that this topic would provoke the biggest emotional reactions from the audience. Overall, as I was giving the presentation, I observed that the audience was actually shocked about the experiences that many children undergo due to the lack of strict laws and/ or lack of law enforcement. Although not all of the listeners had children of their own, which would allow them to connect to the injustices and suffering through their parental lens, many of them were young adolescents who were able to recall their own childhood and make comparisons to the information that they were learning.
