The article chosen is Titled “A Quantitative Assessment of Factors Affecting College Sports Team Unity”, by Seyed-Mahmoud Aghazadeh, Professor and Kwasi Kyei, Professor. This article was published November 5, 2009 in the College Student Journal volume forty-three issue two, pages 294-302. Purpose The purpose of the article is to show the affects of team unity within teams. In this article there was a two part study that was performed on a college. The first part consisted of a questionnaire was sent to one hundred athletes. This questionnaire was made up of several questions that consisted of variables such as class standing, team record, funding, travel accommodations, coaching staff, academic policy are considered to improve team …show more content…
The affirmative coefficient for the travel accommodations (64=.228) suggests that the team unity is likely to increase when travel accommodations increase. The positive coefficient for coaching staff (65=. 185), also indicates that coaching staff increases unity. Finally, the positive coefficient for academic policies (β6 =.213) shows that it also has a positive impact on team unity and increases it as well. All of these variables are statistically significant at .95 confidence level. The coefficients of class standing (β1 = -.067), team record (β2= -.296), and funding (β3 = -.082), have negative signs. On the other hand, the results of the model indicate that the variables are not statistically significant. Conclusion: In using regression analysis, six factors were investigated as possible predictors of team unity among student athletes. These were class standing, team record, funding, travel accommodation, coaching staff and academic policy. The data was collected from 100 students at the college. Based on the outcome interpretations were made about factors affecting college sports team unity. The results show that travel accommodations, coaching staff and academic policies are the most essential factors that play a part in unison among athletes in college sports. In closing the study performed within this college on these students did look at the variables that help to influence sport team unity. The study acknowledged and
Playing soccer will lead to major achievements in people’s lives because of teamwork. In soccer “a player may be homeless yet he finds a family in his team” (Dertarczynski,2009). The truth is that there is a great deal of collaboration in soccer which creates a family for the player. Every player has a role to perform when playing and they all work hand in hand towards the same goal as a team. In this situation, players learn how to relate to each other, thereby motivating each other to be better player. Teammates learn how to trust each other to build important goals as a team. As a matter of fact, teamwork in soccer will increase people’s efficiency both at work and in school. People will learn how to accept their friends or co-worker’s weakness and try to help them to succeed in their various tasks. This will reduce people’s weakness’s and help them form better problem-solving skills towards difficult
Team cohesion is a very important area explored in sport psychology. Though it has as many uses as there are types of groups and teams, it has an exceptionally large impact on the success of sports teams and their ability to reach their goals (Building a Cohesive Team). The ability to become and remain a unified functioning team, especially when faced with conflict or strong opponents, can mean the difference between winning and losing. Developing a team includes many aspects, including trust and familiarity amongst the players, as well as a strong leader, with whom a strong trust and level of comfort is equally important.
Often people criticize collegiate sports claiming that they take large amounts of money and economic resources to keep them running. However, after reading the data of the study conducted in the article, for the most part college athletics is an effective way to increase team identification. One of the main goals of university officials is to foster a communal environment. By allowing college sports there is a sense of community on campuses and can enhance involvement on campus. For colleges, their main goal is to provide its students with educational opportunities, public services, and knowledge growth. College sports can help achieve financial goals and the institutional objectives for the university. One key detail to note however is that fans associated more with the school in the study because the region did not previously have a team and the team beat first year expectations.
Coaches are an important figure in creating this environment but all the team leaders are equally as important. Regardless of the two scenarios presented, improving cohesion via team homogeneity, personal sacrifice and leadership techniques is effective. Moreover, it is very possible that these factors do not need to be inputted by a single person or figure. Although the effectiveness of a coach implementing these cannot be ignored, as long as they are presented by a leader in the team environment then cohesion and in turn success will
Teamwork is a key skill that everyone should have installed in them at a young age.The brain of a child is like a sponge, they absorb everything and use it in the future. Playing football is not an individual sport unlike competitive swim or boxing, when playing a sport heavy contact or not as a team a child learns to work with others to achieve a common goal of winning or advancing. Children become cooperative and have the ability to collaborate with others making them more resourceful and beneficial in any real life situation. According to live strong representative and author of article “Benefits of Teamworks in Sports” Wade Harle, stated “ Teamwork in sports can help give participants stronger communication skills and teach them to work better with others. Additional advantages to teamwork in sports are learning to deal with conflict and varieties of different ideas within a team.” As the young child grows and prospers into a young adult having the teamwork ability and characteristic will only gain them the upper hand when applying for jobs, working on projects and in life commitments and relationships.
This study had five main variables. First, the “inclusion climate,” or how unified the students felt their team was. This was measured by three questions on a 1 to 6 scale. Next was “willingness to cheat,” or the perceived readiness of fellow teammates to be dishonest, which was measured by a 1 to 5 scale question. Also measured was the “college choice satisfaction,” or how content the students felt about their choice of college. This was measured by three questions on a 1 to 7 scale. Next was “ethical leadership,” or whether the student felt that the coach was running the team with positive morals. It was measured by six questions on a 1 to 5 scale. Last was “abusive coaching behavior,” or how the students felt about their coach’s amount of abuse or lack thereof. This was assessed with three questions on a 1 to 5 scale. The perceived ethical climate of the school (measured via three 1 to 5 scale items), as well as the gender of the team, how much media attention the team
This study focused on the importance of leadership among the athletes themselves, their peer leaders. “The results showed that the majority of team task (65%), social (57%), and external (79%) leaders occupied a formal position on their team.” (Loughead, Hardy, & Eys, 2006, p. 142). These leadership functions have different behavioral characteristics provided to the team members. The task leader helps to focus the team on the goal at hand and helps with decision making within the team. This may be the player on the team who calls the plays, the team captain. The research indicated that it was important for team members to elect their captains and other leaders. The social leader brings cohesiveness and harmony to the team. He encourages and rallies the players to get together and get involved. The final leadership function, external leaders help promote the team in the community and help organize fund raising. In addition, leadership within the team, through peers and other group members was a factor in the overall success of the team. They help foster communication between the coaching staff and the athletes. In addition, “it was hypothesized the longer athletes were members of a team, the more likely they would be identified as a
In this documentary there was a mental skill that stood out the most, in particular, group dynamics/ cohesion. Throughout the team’s football season coach Courtney helps the boys feel closer with their fellow teammates, thus, resulting in each individual to look out for one another. With that said, in the movie the team worked together to achieve a common goal which was to win a playoff game while also working on individual interpersonal relationships with other teammates. With that in mind, different elements of task and social cohesion are emphasized in this documentary.
We lean on each other just as much as we strive individually. Together we are stronger and bring out the best in each other. We win together and lose together. We have girls that are our Moms, they keep us under control. Then we have the loud ones, they are the girls that talk when they should and even when they shouldn't. We have the quiet ones who keep to themselves and hardly engage with others. We have the academically talented and the students who can't hand in assignments on time. The one thing we all have in common is our drive and determination towards this team. The second we step over that white line all our lives change. We don't care about anything besides each other in that moment. All of our differences vanish and the one thing that brought us together in the first place takes over. We come
College level competitive sports have many beneficial factors that follow its path for students. On the top of the list is leadership development. Once in the real world where you have to take initiative at a certain job or internship to move up the ladder for the bosses watchful eyes, these skills can be developed experience from college athletics programs. "Sports are educational in the best sense of that word because they teach the participant and the observer new truths about testing oneself and others, about the enduring values of challenge and response, about teamwork, about discipline and perseverance. Above all, intercollegiate contests — at any level of skill — drive home a fundamental lesson: goals worth achieving will be attained only through effort, hard work and sacrifice, and sometimes even those will not be enough to overcome the obstacles life places in our path." (Grace Chen)
When building a successful Division I collegiate basketball program, there are many facets that need to be developed. These facets can include, concise communication, team policies and procedures, encouraging a strong work ethic, character development, and numerous other parts of a team environment. Being dedicated to the cause is imperative to develop belief in the system from the players and coaching staff. The team has to have buy-in to themselves and each other as to the purpose of the program. Once everyone has committed themselves
The recent victory of LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers gives us a clear view into the dynamics of what makes a strong team. The Cavs collectively pulled together when the odds seemed impossible, but their efforts made them victors. A group is a couple of people put together for no apparent reason. The team is like a basketball team; every player has a position. On a team there 's a leader, being the coach, and that leader can choose to disseminate information to the players through the team captain. Everyone is not meant to lead and there are some people that prove that they have the ability to do more than just follow directions. Throughout this course we have learned the importance of team cohesion, communication, conflict resolution, motivation, inclusion, and the importance of diversity. It is important to know the different dynamics between that of a group and that of a team.
Having played a variety of team sports throughout my life, I saw a lot of parallels throughout the class work on team building between positive teamwork and success. Reading Five Dysfunctions of a Team and then applying what we learned from the reading into several team building exercise gave me a unique perspective on how to create and identify key team building skills.
According to Arraya, Pellissier, and Preto (2015), team goal setting involves much more than merely goal setting. The three authors conducted a study on team goal setting in the sports industry. The study revolved around three major factors: goal-orientation, collectivism, and
In many aspects of our life, it is pervasive to work in a team. No matter in company, school, or another type of team it is necessary to be a part of a team and to achieve a team goal by corporations. People join a team with different personalities, goals, values, beliefs and needs. On the one hand, these differences can be a valuable quality of teams. On the other hand, these same differences inevitably lead to different levels of conflicts as well.
