Throughout European colonization in Canada Aboriginals were pressured to abandon their cultural identity and assimilate into western civilization. Aboriginals had inhabited the land for centuries; Aboriginals had already established their own distinct trade networks, social hierarchies and spiritual beliefs. Canadian colonization threatened the existence of Aboriginal culture; Europeans strove to achieve civilization in Canada and coerced “uncivilized” Aboriginals to adopt a Eurocentric way of life. This paper will argue that, a Marxist critique, of “A Red Girls’ Reasoning” demonstrates the persecution of Aboriginal culture in a Eurocentric society. Christine’s mixed race heritage enables her to play a role as a transgressor of rigid class, race and gender distinctions, representing her struggles as a microcosm of the imbalance between European and Aboriginal culture.
“A Red Girl’s Reasoning,” by Pauline Johnson is a story that explores the controversy of incompatible cultural values, specifically regarding marriage customs and traditions. This short story highlights cultural distinctions between Aboriginals and Europeans, by elevating European culture as superior and questioning the authenticity of Aboriginal conventions. Christine’s questions the cultural hierarchy in the Hudson Bay society and demonstrates her role as a transgressor to shrink the cultural imbalance between Aboriginal and European. Her ideals defy socially acceptable ideals, and she tests rigid boundaries

Theodore Fontaine is one of the thousands of young aboriginal peoples who were subjected through the early Canadian system of the Indian residential schools, was physically tortured. Originally speaking Ojibwe, Theodore relates the encounters of a young man deprived of his culture and parents, who were taken away from him at the age of seven, during which he would no longer be free to choose what to say, how to say it, with whom to live and even what culture to embrace. Theodore would then spend the next twelve years undoing what had been done to him since birth, and the rest of his life attempting a reversal of his elementary education culture shock, traumatization, and indoctrination of ethnicity and Canadian supremacy. Out of these experiences, he wrote the “Broken Circle: The Dark Legacy of Indian Residential Schools-A Memoir” and in this review, I considered the Heritage House Publishing Company Ltd publication.
The impact of colonization on First Nations peoples in Canada is unsurpassable, regarding every aspect of Aboriginal life and well-being. Throughout Canadian history, the government has been aiming to assimilate and annihilate Aboriginal people by way of racist policies, ethnocentric institutions, discriminatory laws and destructive capitalist behaviours. Because of this, Aboriginal people have suffered many losses, both physically and culturally. One of the main perpetrators of enacting this loss is the education system. The education system in Canada has and continues to threaten the relationship First Nations peoples have with the land. The connection First Nations peoples have with the land is crucial to their cultures, traditions, ceremonies and beliefs. Colonization and colonialism jeopardize this relationship and that is what this essay will address.
Over the past decades, Aboriginal people (the original people or indigenous occupants of a particular country), have been oppressed by the Canadian society and continue to live under racism resulting in gender/ class oppression. The history of Colonialism, and Capitalism has played a significant role in the construction and impact of how Aborignal people are treated and viewed presently in the Canadian society. The struggles, injustices, prejudice, and discrimination that have plagued Aboriginal peoples for more than three centuries are still grim realities today. The failures of Canada's racist policies toward Aboriginal peoples are reflected in the high levels of unemployment and poor education.
History was often written by an elite and privileged few. These people tended to marginalize the many voices of minority groups. As critical thinkers, it is important to analyze the histories of these groups for a better understanding of why “official stories” of Aboriginal people exist in such a way. By critically examining the history of First Nations and White relations in nineteenth century Canada, “Joe the Painter” and “We Must Farm to Enable us to Live” are able to challenge the common misconceptions of Aboriginals.
In this research paper, I will be explaining how western colonialism and racism destroyed the reputation of aboriginal peoples in Canada. The reason why I chose this topic because it shows the strong relationship to anthropology and after taking aboriginal studies 30, it also shows that I have a clear understanding about the history of aboriginal peoples in Canada, the struggles they have been through over the past decade and the challenges they still face today in modern day society. I’ll be addressing these issues in a couple of paragraphs on the discrimination and the inequalities of these “minorities” and how they had to assimilate into European culture, leaving their way of life behind them.
In the article “Domestic violence against indigenous women is everybody’s problem” domestic violence is depicted as a serious social problem that involves “unspeakable acts of violence” that leaves victims experiencing fear and despair (Taylor 2014). More specifically, the social construction of domestic violence will be discussed with an emphasis on Aboriginal women and a typology of intimate partner violence. The social construction of domestic violence has serious implications for victims of domestic abuse because there is a failure to address the processes that perpetuate the violence. Instead, domestic violence is addressed through the illusion of social support. What is evident is that domestic violence is a social problem that requires comprehensive services, particularly for indigenous women, to address the complexity of the interaction between the individual’s social location and the causes that lead to the violence.

In the article “Decolonization as Reconciliation: The Colonial Dilemma of Canada’s Residential School Apology and Restitution”, Mrs. Patricia Elgersma explains how deeply rooted colonialism is in Canada’s history, which brought forth residential schools, and how it will only be reconciled when decolonization occurs. Elgersma brings forth information about colonization, and what it did to affect the Indigenous peoples of Canada. Elgersma explains the history and belief behind the colonization and assimilation of the Indigenous peoples into a very Eurocentric way of life. She then meshes that with current reconciliation attempts by the government, which causes the history and stories of the Indigenous peoples to go on, not recorded, talked

The Red Book by Barbara Lehman is a wordless book which takes place in an urban snowy city. This book centers around a young boy and a young girl who are at different locations and long to meet each other. The young girl, one of the main characters, walked down the street on a snowy day and found a red book sticking out in the snow. The girl took the book with her to school when she began to look at it during class. The pictures illustrated views of an island, along with a young boy on the island, who happened to be the other main character.
Aboriginal women’s health and wellness issues are present in Canadian society today. When reading, reviewing, and contemplating the information found in the first four units, it sheds an Aboriginal prospective on past and current events. A comparison between pre and post western European colonization highlights the differences between two different times. Colonization was the starting point of the decline of Aboriginal women’s health and wellness; physical, mental, spiritual, emotional, psychological and social wellbeing. Social oppression of the Aboriginal people was the cause and effect that brought forward self harming behaviours, domestic violence, and unhealthy life style choices.
The novel “An Unquiet Mind” starts off describing the life of a young girl, Kay. Early off in Kay’s life she is experiencing traumatizing life events. One of those events is a very close encounter with a plane that flew over the elementary playground very low and “It flew into the trees, exploding directly in front of us” (12). Early on it seems much easier to see how she developed the mental illness, manic-depressive (bipolar) illness. Also, her father showed signs of a bipolar illness and maybe it could be heredity. Another traumatizing event was when Kay and her family moved to California and the complete shock from the change in background. This switch also leads to Kay drinking before she attends classes for high school. Just at the age of 16, Kay is beginning to see just how much her mood swings are affecting her friends and how the bipolar illness is changing her life.
Since the beginning of the colonial process, Indigenous bodies have been seen as disposable. The dehumanization of the Indigenous body and the creation of the other, has allowed for the destruction of Indigenous Femininity. A system rooted in epistemic violence created by the colonial era. Continues to affect how Indigenous women are treated in modern societies. The demotion from “Indian Queen”, an exotic and powerful presence in colonial societies, to the “Dirty Squaw”, a figure depicted as lazy, and troublesome. Indigenous women have struggled to be seen as human people, rather than sexual object in the minds of the white settlers. A systematic dehumanization though through the process of epistemic violence. Which continues to affect how Indigenous women are treated today.
