A reflection on the skills acquired from collaborative learning and how they may be applied in practice The Inter-professional Education (IPE) module is about students from different healthcare professions who learn together about the concepts of health care and how to improve patient care and health services in general. Reynolds (2005) defined IPE as “…collaborative working and the sharing of common goals in relation to the patient /client care or therapy.” Throughout this reflective assignment, I will be discussing what I have learnt from the topics in this module and how I think my learning may be applied in practice. Another aspect of professionalism and consent is patient confidentiality. It states in the DOH (2003) that “Patients generally have the right to object to the use and disclosure of confidential information that identifies them”. This leads on to the issue of trust between the healthcare professional and the patient, which is fundamental. When I’m in practice, I will keep this in mind as I want all of my patients to trust me, feel that they can approach me with confidence and believe in my role as a healthcare professional (Maguire & Pitceathly, 2002). I learnt that the information on the subjects we discussed could be applied in practice. An example of this is when we discussed a scenario where, in short, a patient was angry with his physiotherapist because he was trying to force the patient to walk around when he was in pain, although he walked beforehand. Here, I learnt that we should not assume things and should listen to the patient especially when he says he is in pain even if we think the opposite. From this, we should try to tackle the situation without causing the patient harm, physically and mentally, in the most effective way. We came to the conclusion that the physiotherapist should encourage the patient but not be too persistent in doing so and understand the patient’s feelings. He should also inform the patient’s close relatives so they themselves can encourage the patient and be of comfort and support to him (General Medical Council, 2008); this
