Chapter 1
1 INTRODUCTION
1.1 General
Over the last few decades, large undivided volume buildings such as atrium buildings, covered shopping malls, and airport terminals have become increasingly popular.
Atria are one of the modern building features that have been developed by architects and connecting more than 2 or three floors closed at the top to provide attractive space for the occupants. However atria present a big challenge for fire protection engineers as the automatic sprinkler system may be useless in atria with height more than 15 meter because the possibility of fire occurs at the atrium and sprinkler system not activated because the smoke temperature may be less than activation temperature of automatic sprinklers.
Atrium may be classified to four categories as shown in figure 1.1.
1) Fully open atrium where the building has all its upper levels open to the atrium shaft.
2) Partially open atrium where the building has some of its lower levels open to the shaft and the remainder closed off.
3) Closed atrium where the atrium shaft is separated from the building by ordinary construction. The atrium floor may be used for recreation, restaurants or as a hotel lobby. 4) Sterile tube atrium has an atrium shaft separated from the building by fire resistant construction, with the atrium floor being used only for circulation and containing no combustible material. Figures from 1.2 to 1.5 show different examples of atria all over the world. Figure 1.1 Types of

They include the circulation base, the rectangular shaft, and the restaurant that caps the top of the building. These aspects all work to give the structure a distinctive urban form and a sense of purpose. The circulation of people is most prominently focused on the ground level. Through the application of glass canopies that behave as a transparent ceiling for the covered walkways and aisles in the structure, the whole circulation pattern becomes illuminated with natural light. This brings a sense of openness and exposure to the both the inside and the outside. From this architectural feat alone the public has a clear understanding of what is happening in this space and how to go about navigating through it. Inside this center the urban community is able to walk about the shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues located most prominently throughout the ground floor of this plaza. This translucent and encompassing space in the forum of the structure provides people with a market function as well as a place for shelter. These two aspects increase the versatility of the building. The Prudential Centers open circulation pattern creates a vibrant community for all the classes of people to fully access. Through the accession of indoor transit stations as well as parking, everyone is taken into consideration and there is no stigma around ones race or ethnicity as they interact with the building.
Stability and balance is also achieved through the incorporation of the vertical and horizontal planes. In the southwest facade of the building the vertical slits are balanced with the horizontal planes created by the cubes, cornice and the ornamental horizontal band that runs halfway through the walls. These vertical and horizontal planes further dictate a rhythmic continuity throughout the building. Building's scale is rather modest in comparison to its site and the surrounding landscape and the smooth texture of the facade helps its integration to the environment. (Figure 4)
At the Las Angeles airport, you can see Theme Building built in 1961 by architects William Pereira and Charles Luckman, the intended design, was that it was going to be the main ticketing area for the airport, with its 135 foot supporting steel arches. the building use to have a restaurant in it called Encounter, but has been closed and now the observation deck is the only thing that remains
Inactive outline utilizes the building's geometry, introduction, and mass to condition the structure utilizing regular and climatologic gimmicks like the site's sun oriented insolation.
The main entrance to a building creates the first impression of the whole facility. This gives the end user an overall impression of the building and what it has to offer. Once that impression is made it is hard for it to be unmade. One must continually ask how the threshold will be addressed, how will the materials be used in order to create the necessary feeling that the building needs to present to its end users.
The layout of the Cinerama Dome consists of an auditorium, lobby, restrooms, projection rooms, and storage, see Fig 7. The entrance is located at the centre of the façade and is composed of glazed aluminum doors. The ticket sales area is located to the right of the main entrance. Concrete block wing walls enclose the lobby, which are embellished with decorative detailing in the form of alternating projecting half blocks arranged in a grid pattern (Emerton 2003, P 38). The exterior is circular in plan and the majority of the exterior surface consists of the domed roof. The entrance is housed within a pavilion, sheltered beneath a painted plywood canopy that cantilevers out over the sidewalk, as can be seen in Fig 8. The canopy is
Several of the roofs of the Hagia Sophia are spherical while the the main building itself is supplemented with four cones. The exterior of the largest and main building uses arches while the interior of has posses many severals with the lower levels having the smallest arches while increasing in sizes as it ascends upwards towards the ceiling. Several shapes are implemented among interior corridors which are cylinders, circles, and rectangular forms. The corners of the main arches are accompanied by angels and within these geometric designs are lines. Some of these lines and shapesare chained together, which appears circular or
From the observation tower the horizontal building’s three parallel bands can be seen that extend into the lush landscape. The architects’ concept was to immerse the museum in nature by creating a set of three bracketed pavilions under one roof surrounded by gardens. The roof can be seen as
An oculus denotes a circular opening in the center of a dome or in a wall, the oculus was used by the Romans, one of the finest examples being that in the dome of the Pantheon. Open to the weather. It allows rain to enter and fall to the floor. Where it is carried away through drains. Though the opening looks small, it actually has a diameter of 27 ft; allowing it to light the building just as the sun lights the earth. The rain also keeps the building cool during the hot summer months.
The Roman triumphal arch was traditionally a gateway, consisting of a pair of massive pylons joined by a semi-circular vault. The arch was framed by two columns or more, that were either engaged or stood on projecting pedestals. The columns are appeared to support the entablature, the horizontal section across the top of the vault which separated from the attic section. The attic was a piece of masonry that was decorated with relief sculpture and statuary.
Although the automatic sprinkler system is the most widely used type of fire protection system, it does have its limitations and uses inside certain building types. As previously stated, it is generally used in commercial buildings. This is because there are usually no special hazardous materials in these buildings, or any large quantity of materials that would react negatively with the application of water. It is installed in buildings such as hospitals, schools, and office buildings for life safety first, then building preservation. Since a proper functioning sprinkler system will reduce the fire size and prevent its spread, it will allow for more time of evacuation for these buildings. This is especially useful in hospitals and nursing home settings where there may be a large number of

The entryways of the building come from four different sides and meet in the middle. The overall shape of the building creates different views and facades. The building was not created just on the looks of it; it is made up of a three dimensional, stimulating, tactile human thing.
One building, circular in shape, had four floors connected ingeniously so that customers could move easily from floor to floor. This building acted as the main display area for furniture. The second building consisted of three floors and a basement and acted as the stockroom and service unit, where there was also a selling area for smaller pieces of furniture and home furnishings. Customer services ranged from a baby carriage hire service, a children 's nursery, and a restaurant with seating for 350, to cloakrooms, toilets, a bank, and parking for 1,000 cars.
