Literature Review Dissent within organizations could be seen as organizational problems. The climate of the organizations and the managers misunderstand and unable to identify and respond to the expression of dissent. It is a risky situation for employees to dissent upwardly, but they might gain benefits from doing it. At the beginning, dissent tends to be part of issues of principle and ethics prior findings has indicated that organizational, relational, and individual factors likely drive the upward dissent. However, they do not discuss the strategies of upward dissent used by employees. In this study, the author aims to explore strategies of upward dissent. The study identified four different strategies which include personal, contractual, regulative, and direct tactics. The exit-voice-loyalty model of employees in the super-subordinate relations also studied. Purpose dan Research Questions The purpose of this study was to assess strategies employees use to express upward dissent within contemporary organizations. “RQ1: What identifiable upward dissent strategies do employees use?”(p.192) Methodology The author used a survey questionnaire to collect data from respondents (N=135) who were full-time employees in Arizona. The development of the different methods used to engage ‘employee voice’ strongly coincides with the timeline that businesses have endured through in the present/ twentieth century. In the UK in particular, the methods implemented could be correlated to the economic and political climate of the country at that moment in time.
Effective writing allows for both the participation and addition of knowledge in discourse communities. A discourse community is a group of people that develop and share a sense of identity primarily through the sharing and exchanging of information on a specific subject or field. The two main form of communication in discourse communities are through reading and writing. Through reading one becomes familiar and starts to understand a community, and writing is when one participates in it. Each discourse community develops its own unique technical language, often referred to as lexis. The lexis allows communication between the community to be precise and to the point [6].
In the start of the semester I struggled with the development and proper protocols that needed to be followed to sharpen my writing skills that would have prepared me to become a better and more established University level writer. One of the main reasons why I believed that I did struggle in the beginning of the semester, was because I did not properly follow the SLO guideline that given to myself and my fellow peers by our instructor. Employees find themselves in these situations when the authorities at their organisations have failed to take actions on reported issues affecting that organisation.
