A Review of Cigars, Whiskey and Winning Summary Ulysses S. Grant was the 18th president of the United States. In the book, “Cigar, Whiskey and Winning”, it highlights his management skills during the Civil War as he lead the Union Army to defeat the Confederate Army. When he was younger, Grant attended West Point. He was not the brightest student, but he did enjoy reading. After he graduated, he became second lieutenant in an infantry regiment. In the book it showed him taking advantages of opportunities to rise to victory. He had gotten married and began to feel like his work with the Army was not important, so he resigned from the Army. I would look at my credentials and experience and go for it. I will not allow my fear to hold me back from future opportunities. 2. “Plan For Your Future” This is one of the most important steps in being a leader. Leading a group to a destination is apart of being a leader. Formulating a plan gives direction. I would implement this by getting to a quite place and actually think about what my gift are to the world? Who do I really want to be and what is my passion? I love being able to help people solve their problems. Through accounting, I can assist clients with their accounting issues. I would have to have a strategy and goals of how to reach my destination. Right now, I have calendars and dry erase boards in my office to help remind and assist me in staying en route of my goals. Sometimes I might fall a little shy of my goals, but I should encourage myself to not get discourage and surround myself with positive people that are going to help me reach my goals. 3. ”Be Steadfast” As a leader, it is also important to be loyal, firm and devoted. It is vital to be someone that employees can set their clock to. Knowing my values and what I stand for can help me to be a steadfast leader. Someone who is ambivalent in his or her decision-making does not make a good leader. 4. ”Know How To Agree To Disagree” I have realized in life that I will not always agree with everyone.
