With approximately 1.5 million tuberculosis (TB) cases China would have the second highest affliction after India. This would cause the GDD Program to incorporate TB into its mission in China. The goal was to provide strategic technical assistance and training for TB control including viable research on drug rebellious TB. China also needed to work on controlling the infection and strengthening their laboratory. With such a significant amount of the world’s population infected with TB it ranks as one of the leading cause of diseases around the world. When more than 9 million people are infected with TB it weakens the immune system and a great amount of people die each year because their bodies can’t fight the disease. Every year, 1.4 million people develop active TB. In 1990, 360,000 people in China died from the disease. China revitalized its ineffective TB program in 1991 and launched the 10-year Infectious and Endemic Disease Control project to curb its TB epidemic in 13 of its 31 mainland provinces. China made sure that the newly created program adopted the TB control strategy that WHO recommended. The five basic components of DOTS were incorporated into the program which were political commitment with increased and sustained financing, case detection through quality-assured bacteriology (it’s a recommended method of TB detection), standardized treatment, with supervision and patient support, and an uninterrupted and sustained supply of quality assured anti-TB drugs.
