Gout; What It Is and How to Prevent It
Gout is a common disease which consists of the defective metabolism of uric acid causing arthritis. Gout is caused by the formation of crystallizing uric acid, and that comes from the breakdown of substances called purines. Purines are prevalent in all body’s tissues. Purines are also found in many foods. Uric acid dissolves in the blood, is filtered by the kidneys, and excreted out of the body in urine. As the uric acid level elevates, if not excreted properly, the saturation of the uric acid can cause the formation and deposition of monosodium urate crystals to form in and around the joints. Acute gout attacks usually consist of rapid onset of pain in the affected joint, followed by redness, warmth, swelling, and at times, decreased range of motion has been reported in the affected joint. It is one of the most debilitating forms of arthritis. Inflammation and pain occur when too much uric acid crystallizes and gets deposited within the joints.
