September 20, 2017 Terrorism in Islam
It is many issues involving religion in today’s society like hatred, terrorism, and discrimination. I’m going to focus on terrorism. Terrorism is often associated with Muslims of Islam. The people of today’s society often think since one person from a religion did something horrific, that everyone of that religion is a terrible and do terrible things. I can’t help but not to think Muslims could feel discriminated here in America and or they could think Americans believe they’re not trust worthy all because someone in their religion impacted America so negatively. I also believe it could get extremely uncomfortable for Muslims in America because they are constantly

As I was reading I found out Muslims have been warned by Muhammad that even when they are in another country surrounded by other religions who are always tarnishing and tormenting them, Muslims should never react with violence. Instead of Muslims reacting with violence they should pray for the wrongdoers. As I went along with my research I found out that Muslims are being taught not to become terrorist “he asked them to prevent terrorist from taking advantage of young Muslims who may not speak Arabic well and could fall for the “distorted messages” of IS” (A New Approach to End Terrorism n.p). After reading different articles I thought to myself do I agree with how Muslims are dealing with terrorism but also believe they could do more. I do indeed agree with the Muslims on teaching not to become a terrorist but unfortunately it will always be a group that will not listen and take the advice. Maybe if terrorism was a strictly enforced law in Islam maybe it could be a little more prevented. The other half of me believe it’s not only the Muslims who could possibly stop terrorism. Americans could play a big part on ending terrorism. With that being
Within the past twelve years, Islam has grown to be the second largest religion practiced around the world. Growing up, there weren’t many Muslim people that practiced Islam as there are now. Ten years ago, I would only see about one or two Muslims as I walked down the street, but now I see many more. In Philadelphia, there are more than 200,000 people who are Muslim, and 85% of those people are African-American. In this city when people see African-American Muslims who are garbed up they don’t discriminate against them. To be a Muslim in this society it causes controversy because people are constantly pointing out all of the flaws within them.
Islam in two Americas is a delayed thesis argument about the state of Islāmic/American relations in the US, post 9-11. As a delayed thesis, the author, Ross Douthat, opens the debate with a brief explanation of the “two Americas” as he sees it. Within the current political climate that is America today, it would be hard to argue that this divide does not exist.
Muslims in America faced several difficulties as they tried to gain racial equality and religious freedom. When they entered America and began to form an Islam religion there was a vastly larger number of white Christians than there were Muslims, and as a result, one of the difficulties they faced was that they were outnumbered by other religions. Because of the Islam religion being outnumbered by other religions, there was much less knowledge on their religion than there was on Christianity, leading to them being a minority compared to white Christians. As a result of this, there were not as many organizations that helped to increase the number of Islam presence in America. One of the organizations that was developed to help the Islam religion in America was the creation of the Moorish Science Temple, which Noble Drew Ali founded because "African Americans were descended from the
"Who are you?"(Eggers 206) were the first words that Abdulrahman Zeitoun heard from the police officers that had surrounded him and his friends with their guns drawn as he walked out of 5010 Claiborne that he owned. He had been stopping by the house to use the telephone once a day to call his wife Kathy, who was in Arizona with their four children to escape Hurricane Katrina, a catagory 5 hurricane that had hit New Orleans, the city they lived in. Abdulrahman Zeitoun had stayed home to protect his many properties that he and his family had required in the sixteen years since he had moved to the city. He was a general contractor and owner of Zeitoun Painting Contractors, LLC. He also owned several rental houses around the city and had
The video “Being Muslim- American” by Dalia Khan is about what it means for her being a Muslim- American and all the obstacles and discrimination she had to face. Also, her experience on her first time wearing a hijab and instead of people showing hate they should show compassion and support to their fellow Muslim friends. I was really moved by the way she described everything about being Muslim- American.
“Since 9/11, Muslims in America are living in fear” (“In a virtual internment camp: Muslim Americans since 9/11”). When our World Trade Center came crashing down, American had one more enemy, Muslims. 9/11 was a tragic act of terrorism and those victims will not be forgotten, but because of the Muslims that did this terrible act most Muslims in America were grouped into one category, evil.
On September 11th, 2001, a terrible event in history took place. With thousands dead and many more injured, the shocked and horrified US citizens looked for someone or something to blame. All Muslims ended up taking the blame for the actions of a small, radical, Islamic group called ISIS. The whole Islamic community shouldn’t receive hate and discrimination, just because the terrorists acted under the same religious beliefs.
The themes that I thought connect to the texts and videos we have expanded on in class are Identity and Boundaries (barriers). In this essay I will group the readings and videos and explore the theme in each and relate it back to Identity and Boundaries. Then how we can perhaps use related topics to illustrate my point.
Islam, a religion of people submitting to one God, seeking peace and a way of life without sin, is always misunderstood throughout the world. What some consider act of bigotry, others believe it to be the lack of education and wrong portrayal of events in media; however, one cannot not justify the so little knowledge that America and Americans have about Islam and Muslims. Historically there are have been myths, many attacks on Islam and much confusion between Islam as a religion and Middle Easter culture that is always associated with it. This paper is meant to dispel, or rather educate about the big issues that plague people’s minds with false ideas and this will only be touching the surface.
What it’s Like to be a Muslim in America by Dalia Mogahed and A Tale of Two Americas and the Mini-mart Where They Collided by Anand Giridharadas, both talk about what life is like being the “other” in America. Being a minority and trying to live a normal life interacting with the majority is shone to be difficult. There are two worlds living in one country, but neither of them truly understand each other.
According to research obtained by Cornell University scientists, 92% of Americans watch TV, 87% read newspapers, and 81% specifically watch local or national televised news stations…
dear brothers and sisters in Islam. My name is Osman Azharuddin and today I will be speaking about a topic that is not shed light upon enough: the history of Muslims in America. Don’t you want to know how your fellow brothers and sisters got here? What made it possible for you to get here? After my speech, insha’Allah, I anticipate that you will leave with more knowledge and gratitude for the Muslims before us, our unsung heroes.
In our culture, we have the privilege and ability to implement critical debate with our opponents. We can criticize our own words, belief, and action in politics and religion and correct mistakes. Criticism in Islam rare because of the legal system indoctrinated with religion and culture. Islam, a way of life includes the legal, political, social, and culture. In the US where Islam a minority leaders of Islam prepared to address fault having the Koran at hand. Therefore; the study and knowledge about Muhammad essential to debate and successfully criticize. Yours Truly have noticed a few are armed with knowledge. Who is the man Muhammad and his
Driving along the highway, all eyes are drawn as a magnet to the unique building with its golden dome and unusual architecture. The Islamic Center is located at the base of a residential street in a small neighborhood. The center houses an Islamic school, a community center, an international school and the Mosque, which is the place of worship for Muslims.
This survey reveals that the problem with the Islam faith is not racial: The Muslim people are welcomed, the Islam faith is not. The violence that has been perpetrated against America, whether executed or planned, has brought to fruition religious persecution not seen since the persecution of the Jews in W.W.II. This “trust no Arab” attitude has brought shame to the Constitutional intentions of freedom of religion intended by our forefathers, and has set religious tolerance back 200 years. Looking at media representation of Muslim Americans prior to 9-11, it shows religious diversity in America, depicting Muslim America as just another religious community seeking to advance and protect their interests, not unlike other Americans. After 9-11 the media portrayed representations of threat and fear, creating boundaries between Muslims and other Americans. Such depiction transforms the identity of Muslims and American religious pluralism (Byng, M. pg. 3).
