You are relaxing in your chair,just tipping back and forth lightly. You're leaning back a little too far and--woah,close one. Authors use these types of devices to create suspense to draw their readers into their work.Ray Bradbury does just that in "A Sound of Thunder" where the main character ,Eckles, goes on a safari hunt in the past.Through his use of repetition,imagery,and pacing Bradbury creates anticipation in the storyline. One common literary device used is repetition. An author will most likely use a word or phrase over and over again to emphasis their point.It is a usesful tool due to the fact it catches the reader's attention,and leads them to wonder as to why that particualr message is vital to the story.For example, in "A Sound of Thunder" the author states,"...and everything returning to the fresh death,the seed death,the green death"(Bradbury 500). In other words,mirroring emotions. Speaking of mirroring emotions,the reader could also have their own emotions of what is going on through a character's eyes.Such as,"Suddenly it all ceased,as if someone had shut a door.Silence."(Bradbury 505). while the text does not hint at Eckles's emotions,the moment could have the reading feeling anxious because they heard the silence through the author's use of imagery.
