A Student A Deserving Child

Introduction
As I begin my teaching career, I will always remember that I am in a privileged position to shape and influence lives. I hope to guide my decisions, words and actions with the phrase “every student a deserving child”.
“Every child should have a caring adult in their lives. And that’s not always a biological parent or family member. It may be a friend or neighbour. Often times it is a teacher.”

The expression “every student a deserving child” means every student is deserving of unconditional care and concern; these do not have to be earned. Central to the education service is the role of care. The Teachers’ Vision reads Lead, Care, Inspire (Ho, 2009) and then Minster for Education Heng Swee Keat similarly emphasised “every teacher a caring educator” (Heng, 2012a; Heng, 2014). Research in educational psychology found that a teacher who cares for students addresses their affective needs for belongingness (Maslow, 1970) and for relatedness (Ryan & Deci, 2000).
