Carlisle is the only city in Cumbria, automatically making it the administrative centre of the county. Other than administration, Carlisle has several other areas in which its activities are focused, such as tourism, shopping, and education. These areas are known as settlement functions. Functions tend to change and develop as a city grows over the years. Carlisle is a successful city, but whether or not this is due to its changing functions is debatable.
Annan Academy’s Geography class went to Carlisle in September 2015 to obtain primary research data of the city’s geographical issues.
Method 1
In order to figure out some of the current main functions of Carlisle, the first research method used for this report was two RICEPOTS surveys of different areas in Carlisle – the CBD (the square near the Tourist Information Centre) and the area from West Tower Street to Corporation Road. These areas were chosen to display a contrast in the land usage of two areas of Carlisle which are close together. The RICEPOTS surveys were completed by walking around the areas and annotating a map with the purpose of each building in the area. Once both maps were annotated, the information was put into a table before being compiled into a comparative bar graph (see: Graph 1).
The results show that West Tower Street to Corporation Road is largely residential, with 35 terraced houses, and that the square near the Tourist Information Centre is largely commercial with 47 specialist shops
In this Geography GCSE controlled assessment project, I will be focusing on rivers and I have chosen a hypothesis to prove that erosion is making an impact on the Loughton Brook Rivers. My hypothesis is, “The river Loughton brook becomes wider and deeper due to erosion as it moves downstream”. I will be investigating if erosion takes place downstream in the river. I will investigate if hydraulic action has an impact. I will study about vertical erosion, lateral erosion, Cross profile and hydraulic action.
Chivalry elevated women’s social status because it went beyond respecting women, and extended to cherishing their unique traits as well. Whereas before, they were really only limited to housework, and were not really looked at beyond that.
The 5 themes of geography are location, place, human-environment interaction, movement, and region. These 5 themes are what shape our world. Without these five themes, how would we give directions or point people to a specific place? Therefore I will show you how important the 5 Themes Of Geography are and how they could relate to you.
1. Asking geographic questions: Questions revolve around asking why things are where they are, how they got there and what is the significance of their being there (NGS)?
Not only does this area have practicable functions for such activities like recreation , bird watching, hiking , wildlife habitat
Aim: The overall aim of the expedition is to compare the residential environments of the three sites along the River Leith.
Over the course of the centuries maps have been used to find locations all over the world. They have evolved and to become more advanced, thanks to technology. Of course, there are specific ways to use a map such as basic components. Basic components include a compass rose which indicates the cardinal directions. Legends is the key where symbols are used to help find a point on the map, or in other words, lead the way. A scale can range from as far as a continent to as close as a house. All these components are important while using a map.
I request to be in the AP human geography course because college year is just around the corner and I consider it is imperative to expand my knowledge on geography and who it affects us human beings. My main objectives and goals this school year are to learn and understand the connections between the economic, social, political and environmental development of the human race in a global society. This course will not only benefit me in this area, but will also help me employ the methods of geographers, especially though observation, map making and data gathering. My other school year goal is ending this year being more geoliterate that is becoming more engaged in contemporary global issues and more multicultural. In this course I will the
“Why Geography Matters More Than Ever,” was written by Harm De Blij. It was published August 17th 2012 by Oxford University Press, USA with 354 pages in it.
We have an average number single detached and semi detached homes for people who earn average to high incomes, a high number of duplex homes for the majority of the citizens who earn high to loft-style incomes. Finally high and low rise apartments for the residents who earn average to low incomes
The study area is classified into 9 categories. Each land use type is formulated into Figure 1 and Table 1. The study area has clearly been divided into two functional parts, the northern part is mainly for residential and commercial use, and the southern part is primarily occupied by industrial and institutional use.
In this assignment, you will evaluate Sherway Gardens Shopping Centre in the context of its surrounding land uses and surrounding population. Distance decay models suggest that most customers at a shopping facility reside less than ten minutes travel time from the facility. This suggests that a shopping facility should reflect the retail needs of the surrounding population. You will determine if the market focus of Sherway Gardens reflects the surrounding population and if there are particular opportunities or threats for this facility in the future.
Chapter eight goes into detail on how to use geography to connect people and places. Maxim states, “Geography is described as an integrative discipline that bring together the physical and human dimensions of the world in the study of people, places, and environment” (Maxim, 2014, p. 336). I really enjoyed reading about how maps model our world. It is so important for students to know what a map is and how to use it. There are many skills to teach students when using a map. Secondly, I liked the representing the world through informal block play. This activity involves a lot of hands-on materials. The students can use the different materials to create their own world. I feel this is meaning for students to be able to build their own geographical world. However, it is also necessary to teach our students the symbols of the map (Maxim, 2014, p. 359). It is best to teach students these symbols at an early age. The three different symbols are point symbols, line symbols, and area symbols. The point symbols are signs, dots, and triangles used to represent place or positional data such as a city (Maxim, 2014, p. 360). The line
