A STUDY ON THE MENTAL HEALTH STATUS
OF GYM GOING AND NON GOING STUDENTS

Abstract: The significance of various forms of physical activity and exercise for the enhancement of health in general and mental health in particular is so distinct. Keeping this in mind the present study aims to compare “mental health status” of gym going (GG) and non gym going (NGG) students. Fifty students (25 GG and 25 NGG) of Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh were taken as the subjects of the study. The age of the subjects ranged from 17-24 years. GG and NGG students were those who are studying in undergraduate course at AMU, Aligarh. The mental health status of the subjects was measured by using Mental health checklist (MHC) constructed by Kumar (1992). The t test was used to compare the mean score of GG students and NGG students. The result of the study indicated that significant difference exists between GG students and NGG students at 0.05 level of significance.

Introduction
The mental health describes a level of psychological well-being, or an absence of a mental disorder. In recent years clinical psychologists as well as educationists have started giving proper attention to the study of mental health. However, exercise is a developmental behavior intervention that has displayed strong promise in alleviating symptoms of depression. The objective is examine whether physical activity is associated with depression in an average size population based on gender and age. A total of 310 participates ( 123 Male and 184 females and 3 other ) of UO students and other random volunteered to participate. All participants age ranged from 14 to 99, had to completed two self- report questionnaires. Besides answering question on their exercise habits during the past week, also took into account that all participants also completed CES-D questionnaire that determine their depression levels. In the surveyed there was a lower level of depression with more frequent weekly exercise give it a negative correlation. Also with the duration question, showed a significant negative correlation with the levels of depression. The efficiency of exercise in reducing depression cannot be determined because of the small size of participates and the lack of excellent quality research on population with adequate follow up
Some hypothesize that moderate levels of exercise will decrease the symptoms of mental health conditions (Blumenthal et al., 2007; Diaz & Motta, 2008; Motta, Kuligowski, & Marino, 2010; Rosenbaum, Nguyen, Lenehan, Tiedemann, van der Ploeg, & Sherrington, 2011) and therefore be used as an alternative or complimentary treatment option for mental health (Libby, Pilver, & Desai, 2012).
Mental health is defined as the state of satisfactory use of mental function, which results in productive activities, interactions, adjustment to change and coping with challenges (Healthy People 2020, 2012). It is fundamental to one's personal well-being, his interpersonal relationships, and fruitful participation in, and contribution to, society in general. Mental illness or mental disorder refers as a whole to all diagnosable disturbances of the mind. These disturbances are characterized by changes in thinking, mood, and/or behavior, which produce pain, discomfort, abnormal functioning or death. Mental illnesses are serious medical conditions, which cannot be overcome by simple will power. They are not caused by personality weakness or intelligence (Healthy People 2020; NAMI, 2012).
Many researches indicated that exercise have impact on mental disorders such as depression. Depression is a common problem that affects many people’s lives directly or indirectly, through their family members or friends. This paper will introduce the definition of exercise and depression, what the influence that exercise have on depression, biological supportive reason, under what circumstance the treatment have the best influence and the negative effects on certain condition.
Psychological research has had a fundamental impact on mental health in the UK, for instance, it has ignited new treatments and made the practices of organisations like the NHS more efficient. However, some may critique the impact research has actually had, for example, the change that has actually occurred because of research. Looking at the impact of research is vital because surely one of the main aims of research is to positively benefit patient’s lives. It means changes in the practices of health organisations are well-informed resulting in effective changes, improving efficiency of health organisations. There has been much research carried out into the stigma of mental health disorders, biological causes e.g. role of dopamine in schizophrenia and new therapies that have emerged- which will all be assessed.
The main purpose of the ensuing evaluation is to determine if Ms. Tyler is competent to stand trial for accused crimes, and needs to be evaluated for criminal responsibility. She exhibits signs of mental illness; further investigation via a mental status assessment is required.
Mental health has been a recurring topic in present society and it is a very large section of health care in general. Health can be termed as an absence of disease, but it really is much more than that and should encompass every facet of the human, mind and body. The SF-12 questionnaire was used to assess the health status of the subjects. The data was looked at sorting by gender differences and the activity level categories as they wanted to know these differences. The results showed a significant effect between physical activity levels and health status but there was not a significant change when looking at health status when separating by gender. The effect found between physical activity levels and mental health showed that 150 minutes was sufficient to increase mental health. For all physical activity over 150 minutes there was not an increase to show the subjects continued to increase their health status.
The World health organization defines mental health as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease where as the English Oxford dictionary refers to mental health as a person 's condition with regard to their psychological and emotional well-being.
Being in a state of good mental health is more than simply the absence of a mental disorder, such as depression, mania, dissociative identity disorder, or anxiety. To be mentally healthy is to have a state of mind in which one is able to cope with the stresses of daily life, is able to be work and be productive, and realize his or her capabilities and potential. Simply put, mental health acts as the basis for an individual’s effective functioning and sense of well-being.
Mental Health as described by LaVeist and Thomas (2005) is “a state of successful performance of mental function, resulting in productive activities, fulfilling relationships with other people, and the ability to adapt to change and cope with adversity” (p. 84). There are many ways to reduce stress and anxiety, as well as increase self-esteem in one’s life. For the purpose of this study, exercise is used as a form of physical activity. Engaging in physical activity is one contributor to better someone’s mental health. With that being said, the overall reason for this study is to review and describe how different variables affect individual’s stress level, anxiety level, and self-esteem level.
Exercise may be one of the most important influences on your overall health to date. While the only benefits that are mainly focused on are the physical benefits, significant psychological impacts can also be linked to exercise.
