The size of the elderly rose in absolute terms during the last century from 12 million in 1901 to approximately 71 million in 2001 and is likely to reach 113 million in 2016. Yet another feature of ageing in India is the fact that the proportion of elderly is much higher in the rural areas than in the urban areas. The sex-wise pattern of growth of elderly population reveals that the increase is greater among women in the recent past, which indicates that elderly women will outnumber elderly men in the future.
There is therefore an urgent need to examine the various aspects of this new and fast growing population to ensure the design of appropriate policy and programmes directed to meet the varied needs of this vulnerable and dependent group. India, like many traditional societies, today faces a unique situation in providing care for its elderly as the existing old-age support structures in the form of family, kith and kin, are fast eroding and the elderly are ill-equipped to cope alone with their lives in the face of infirmity and disability. The onus of caring for the elderly is therefore now much more on the state than the family and will necessitate the creation of adequate institutional support. While the western countries have a fairly well organised network of institutions for the care of the elderly, the growth and
The human species of the world are growing older, and existing longer. Research shows that the average life expectancy of humans living past the age of 80, since the 1800s to that of 2011, has increased by almost 10% per year, with women leading the way with a growth expectancy growing from that of 6.4% to that of 9.6%, surpassing their male counterpart whose life expectancy show an increase from 5.9% to that of 8.2%. As the human life expectancy increases, there also comes an increase concerns by individuals and government official alike in regards to elder care. This literature looks at what is being carried out by individuals as well as government officials to deal with the cost of living longer. We will examination approaches identified
As a MSW student at a long term care home, I get an opportunity to take on many duties and activities. For starters, I get to do a lot of administration work including filing, faxing, photocopying, writing thank you letters for those who came for the tour of the home, mailing care conference letters to families to let them know when it is and making phone calls to family members as well as different agencies such as Community Care Access Centre (CCAC). One of the main duties and most important I find is visiting residents and addressing any concerns they may have. This can include issues that they may be experiencing with another resident and connecting them with different services such as Amy’s Helping Hands and transportation services. To
When you are working in health and social care environment concerns might arise from specific incidents or emergencies. However, when you are working in residential care home there are lots of concerns that might arise as I have discussed in my P4 if a fire was to happen. So, one of the main concerns that might arise in a care home will be if there was a security codes taking place because theft might happen as everybody will be focusing on getting the residents of the care home out of the building. The reason why I have chosen this responses is because I believe that it is a very important to be aware including remember when fire is taking place. Even though your first priority should be getting the residents out of the building as they are

Many seniors live in areas where cold weather is a way of life, especially in winter. These are not the chilly breezes that come off the water in Florida, these are freezing temperatures that can cause severe hardships, loss of power and electricity, frozen pipes, and loss of services. In-home care personnel can help your senior loved ones prepare for the cold weather.
Back in twentieth century, a tiny fragment of mere 5% population was comprised of people aged 65 and above. A little spike in this segment was observed during the period of 1950s-1960s; however, that spike was not significant and restricted to 8% of entire population (Chart 1.1). Many factors were responsible for the small proportion of senior population, the most prominent one though, low life expectancy, high fertility/birth rates and limitation of health services.
Recently, Statistic Canada has point out “Seniors are projected to become more numerous than children in Canada by 2017 --- a milestone in the country’s history.” (Statistics Canada, 2016) To discuss more in depth, according to the data collected from Statistic Canada, there is a post-war baby boom in 1950s, afterwards, there has been a steady decline in fertility. The median age in Canada was 27.2 in 1956 and climbed to 39.5 in 2006 (Statistics Canada, 2016). With the decrease in fertility and mortality, the problem of aging population in Canada occurs. In present time, those great number of baby boomers are now leave to workforce and begin to retire. It results in the rise of Canada’s elderly dependency ration. (National Seniors Council(Canada), 2011) For elders, the performance in many physical and mental tasks tend to decline with age, which
An elderly people suffer from numerous challenges. Office for National Statistics analysis shows 600,000 increase between 2001 and 2011 in a number of people living on their own. Almost 60 percent of people aged
Though eating well may be vital for everyone, it is especially important as you grow older. As you age, your daily food choices can mean the difference in your health as well as how you look and feel. One of the benefits of senior home care services in Dallas is the assurance that your loved one has a balanced mix of foods every day.
This paper will address aging population in Canada and the strain this will have on our healthcare system. The aging population will bring with it an increase in chronic conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, dementia, and heart disease. These are complex conditions that the healthcare system is currently not prepared to handle due to the lack of home health supports. This issue is important for the nursing profession because as the population ages, people have more chronic conditions and corresponding need for hospitalization and medical care. Canada’s aging population is not sustainable in our current healthcare system as there is a lack of homecare and health promotion.
Describe the social, political, economic, cultural values and/or ideology that form the basis for the author’s perspectives; The value and or ideology that form the basis for the authors’ perspective is that the government makes families of elderly and the elderly individuals themselves are more dependent on government institutions rather than government aiding families to be more reliable in taking care of aging family member. Liberty of choice making verses the limiting choice making the authors state that “Government has begun to consider offering formal services on an as-needed basis rather than as an all-or-nothing package. Several members of Congress, for example, are sponsoring legislation to expand the options for in-home care available to older adults and their families (Smyer&Plantz).” And finally government
Centuries ago as people aged and needed assistance with care including hygiene, meals, toileting and moving around, were given assistance from members of their family within the home. Most of these cares were provided by elderly patient daughters to care for them so they can continue to live home. The number of females in the workforce has increased over the years however the increase of females in the workforce is affecting the age females are having children therefore parents are entering their elderly years when their daughters are in their prime of their work years making it difficult to be available to provide care. Life expectancy has increased which means there are more people living longer and entering the age when they may need care. People who need assistance with care tend to find it hard to seek help, as they believe this is a sure sign they are getting old as they can no longer effectively care for themselves and sometimes takes a toll on the self esteem. Children of elderly patients tend to reluctant to admit they can no longer care for their parents as this may imply they no longer care to their parents. As older people we often pride on our independence and privacy and the thought of giving that control someone else is very scary for many elderly patients. This does hinder elderly patients from starting the process of seeking long term care (LTC).
