Retail Generic Strategies The author of this paper is asked to identify and describe three different retail firms. The author is then asked to note the three broad strategies that each firm has seemingly chosen to have used as their general way of doing business. The author is then asked to identify two tactics that each firm employs to reinforce and illustrate their method of competition. Lastly, the tactics that each firm seems to be employing are to assessed for efficacy and effectiveness. Identifying Retail Firms The first firm that will be used is Wal-Mart. They are the largest retailer in the United States (if not the world) and have more than a million employees in the United States alone. They are the clear discounter in the United States retail market. They have competitors in this regard like K-Mart and Target, but Wal-Mart is by far the biggest fish in the discount retailer pond and they cater to buyers of all basic consumable and durable goods (Wal-Mart, 2013). The next retail up for review is Target. They are in much the same market and niche as Wal-Mart but their durable and even some of their consumable goods are deemed by most to be a little more up-scale and Target is generally not subject to the same social responsibility ire that Wal-Mart has shown on them. Basically, Target does much the same thing as Wal-Mart but they focus on people that do not like Wal-Mart and/or are seeking a slightly better level of good and service than can commonly be found
