After reading “A Summer’s Day” by Mary Oliver, I’ve noticed that she asked the question, “What will you do with your one wild and precious life?” Reflecting on this question and “A Summer’s Day,” I know that just knowing what I want to be once I graduate with my degree is not enough anymore. So, I have thought about Oliver’s question a little deeper. With her question in mind, I have realized that I want to be able to start off working in a fast paced career in the accounting field then eventually being able to advance to becoming a Certified Public Accountant. Based on my values assessment, achievement and working conditions are two of the most important factors that I should consider when searching for potential careers. It is important that
In the story “All Summer in a Day,” by Ray Bradbury, there are quite a few themes associated. One major theme is isolation. This story, about a group of children living on Venus, focuses on a character named Margot. She isolates herself from the other children, as they isolate themselves from her.
An anonymous quote of “Jealousy is just a lack of self confidence” this quote shows that when Margot is locked into the closet the children are jealous of her seeing the sun. The piece I will be analyzing is “All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury. It is about a little girl, Margot, who moved to Venus, a place where there it is constantly raining, from Earth. The story describes how the everlasting rain impacts Margot psychologically and socially, as she suffers from depression which is made worse by the other childrens’ regular bullying. After the seven years of rain, the sun comes out and brightens all of the childrens’ lives - except Margot, who is locked in the closet by William, the main bully, and the bystanders. This story has many aspects which can be analyzed.
2,555 days. 2,554 of those you’re under a dark constant cloud of rain, and the world seems to follow along with the grayness of the sky. But once, out of those 2,555 days, a bright light shines upon the horizon. For that day, the world seems to be alive again. But for Margot, the main character in Ray Bradbury’s All Summer In a Day, that opportunity was stripped away from her. In this story, the setting is on the planet Venus, when humans from Earth decided to set up civilization and move to the planet. The problem on Venus, though, is that it rains straight for seven years, Out of those seven years, the Sun comes out for only one day. Margot came to Venus only five years ago, so she remembers the Sun in all its glory. The other children on

The themes of “All Summer In A Day” and “If Only We Had Taller Been” are as different as the plots of the two stories. Although on the surface a story about a bunch of children wanting to see the sun, and another about a person’s desire to touch the sky, would seem like they have nothing in common, if one looks at their themes it’s incredibly easy to see that both of Ray Bradbury’s stories have more in common than in contrast. The theme of “All Summer In A Day”, when someone is overcome with jealousy, their actions are completely dictated by it, shows how the desire to see the sun had a negative impact on the characters. The theme of “If Only We Had Taller Been”, humanity is never fully satisfied with the status quo and is always striving to do more, shows how the desire for more has a positive impact on the characters. This would be considered as a difference, but both stories still contain the desire for more.
The feedback I got from others along with what I had said about myself drew quite close parallels. Some of the responses that were quite similar consisted of feedback such as “I am easy to communicated with”, “during a conversation, I make others feel comfortable and calm”, and that I am enjoyable to be around. This is good feedback for me, it allows me to feel more confident in conversation knowing that most people feel comfortable around me. This allows me to have stronger, more professional conversations with coworkers during interactions. In the career focus module, I completed the value exercise (Mind Tools). This helped me decide on what I have determined as my most important values. Completing this task has helped me realize that life and decisions are much easier when I choose to honor these values. I have developed a list of values that were based around the following statements. Identifying times when I was most happy, proud, and most fulfilled and satisfied. Learning about the link between situational influences and values have helped me clearly define my values during this process. Being able to tell the differences in values and situational influences allows me to better understand situations along with myself. Values such as commitment, challenge, consistency, creativity, trustworthiness and fun I ranked as my more important. I have found that in my current professional career when I apply these every
“It was as if, in the midst of a film concerning an avalanche, a tornado, a hurricane, a volcanic eruption, something had, first, gone wrong with the sound apparatus, thus muffling and finally cutting off all noise, all the blasts and repercussions and thunders, and then, second, ripped the film from the projector and inserted in its place a beautiful tropical slide which did not move or tremor.” (Bradbury, 1954) In the short story, “All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury, it describes a world of children living in Venus. The story explains what happens to the main character, Margot, during an extremely exciting time. It had been raining for 7 years, but during the story, we learn what happens during the moments after it stops raining. Bradbury writes that due to ignorance, people develop jealous feelings towards others. This causes isolation, depression, and harassment, which Margot is a victim of. This author portrays this theme in various ways throughout the story that include when the main character is forced into a closet, separated from her other classmates, and accused of lying.
