The survey I conducted was done both in person and over the phone. Those who participated varied in age, occupation and drug of choice to have a large overview. All involved were asked the same 10 open ended questions. The purpose of this survey was to see what services they enjoyed using and found helpful, what we do that helps or hinders them post treatment (and other centres as well), roles we can play to help the clients, when post treatment should be discussed, if we 've provided adequate knowledge on it and if they think there should be workshops on post treatment. When talking with the 10 clients it became apparent that the most important components of post treatment were following up with staff and other clients, the social environment and recovery groups as well as supports (including doctors and counsellors). Other components that came up were nutrition and exercise, NA and AA, as well as churches and spirituality groups. I wasn 't surprised of what important components came up as I have seen first hand that groups within the centre are highly attended and that support comes up as a common topic, but was pleasantly surprised that they were continuing (or wanting to continue with groups and supports upon leaving). All except one client said they wanted more self involvement in the post treatment plan than they had as they can 't act on it until they leave, the one client stated he wanted to use input from others (client services/staff/other clients) to gather more
At the beginning of my training, I was hesitant to work with people struggling with addiction. However, at this point, I am excited to begin working with this population. The raw honesty presented in the group setting along with the anger at the possibility of losing a safe place created a dynamic I wanted to further explore. Research supports that individuals attending group therapy in a 12 step program format succeed if they have the proper support and motivation (Cite). The group dynamic demonstrated that recovery takes time and self-discovery, similar to other situations dealt with in therapy. Subsequently, by using my sense of self and humor with clients struggling with addiction, I can help them in their journey. Furthermore, the client needs to identify accountability at their own pace in the process and not when others dictate. This knowledge and the personalization of addiction will aid me in the future support of my
A question that I was curious about asking dealt with how individuals in recovery function as substance abuse counselors. From experience, I have noticed that most substance abuse counselors are themselves in recovery. When I was in treatment, I related much better to
There are types of approaches to help an individual with recovering from drug and substance abuse. The approaches that are being looked at to help someone recover is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET), Medication Management, Community Reinforcement Approach (CRA), and Community Reinforcement and Family Training Approach (CRAFT).
The program is conducted around shared experiences, strength and hope, through individuals who are recovering from their addictions.
The client met with his counselor on 05/06/2017 for his one on one session to discuss his treatment plan goals. the client has been on track with his goals and is working on his second step. the client discuss one of the things that his currently working on and that is acceptance. the client explained that he is having a hard time acceptance certain situations and things that happen in his life, and most of the time it result in him resulting to using drugs. the client as well talked about being disappointed in himself for relapsing after two years of being sober. the client reported that he didn't use the tools that were given to him from his last his was in the program, getting a sponsor and learning coping skills. the client reported that
Creating this program and seeing that the offenders followed through with the treatment process was the primary goal. In order to collect the necessary data, counselors needed to interview each participate. This procedure is what enabled them to understand better and further assist participants with treatment and remaining on the correct path. The interview process took place 12 months after offenders were released from prison. A research team from the university of
While doing research on this community, it became apparent that the public has access to many different social services that have helped the residents achieve wellness (Abra et al., 2016), including Edgewood Health Network, a rehabilitation centre for addictions and mental health. However, there is no support for people who are currently active drug users or have relapsed (Edgewood Health Network, n.d). Studies have shown that relapsed users have an increased risk of
This model is used in this case to assess the addiction recovery group in different aspects to provide the overall effectiveness required for service delivery. Other resources such as member awareness and inclusion models are employed as well. Another area of operation realized during the mental health group visit is an extrapolation of care to those addicted to other related drugs (Fullerton et al., 2014). The individuals are provided with the antidote and then monitored until stability is attained. Some of the individuals are subjected to back surgery especially in advanced cases of drug
The interview conducted on Sunday, May 28, 2017, at 5 p.m., with a substance abuse counselor for the CMS school system. To begin with, the questionnaire consisted of 5 questions pertaining to the guidelines in a substance abuse group treatment setting, limits to content in membership, the appropriate size and leadership of the group, and recruiting select group members.
Kye (Kinesiologist, health and fitness supervisor and sober sports president) said that he does speak of post treatment plans but mostly in passing, but would be interested in speaking more on the topic. He wants clients to think of what they want their lives to look like and help them to be able to be involved in fun activities in their communities such as the sober sports. Kye tries to reiterate the importance of the bio-social-psycho-spirituality aspect. He said when speaking to the clients he tries to use metaphors and connecting language. For instance, relating the way our bodies work to a nice car; the exterior may look nice but there may be work to be done under the hood to get it running how it should and can be. His goal is to be able to connect with them and ‘wake them up.’ He spoke a bit about sober sports, letting me know it’s a non-profit and that he was part of coming up with the vision/mission statement.
One of the main questions to ask in researching the drug recovery centers is what type of results they expect from those that enter their program. Do they expect someone to leave the program and continue to abstain
Paul (counsellor) discusses post treatment with clients as much as he can. He speaks to them one-on-one 5 days a week, and to groups 2 times per week. If it’s a one-on-one talk it will typically occur in his office, and for groups it will be spoken about in the lounge. Paul tries to meet clients where they are and identify their levels of motivation. He feels that changes towards post treatment would be beneficial for everyone, and though we may be doing ‘enough’ that things could be done in different ways. Paul’s beliefs around post treatment are about teaching people to plan ahead, for instance they may have been here for a month but they still have the rest of their lives and now have a certain amount of time to fill when the previously
In this article, the authors examined factors that might predict attendance and participation in 12-step programs. Participants were recruited for intensive outpatient treatment upon admitting into community treatment programs. After the baseline assessment, participants were randomly enrolled to treatment as usual (TAU) with (Stimulant Abuser Groups to Engage in 12-Step Programs) Stage-12 or TAU alone. Participated were took the assessment at baseline, week 4(mid treatment), week 8 (end-of-treatment), 3 and 6 month after the treatment. The four variables of outcome assessment were speaking, attending, duties at 12 step meetings, other peer recovery support groups. They found baseline measures of perceived benefit of 12 step groups predicted
The gift of empathy can be applied first and foremost and individuals will be able to feel the compassion, unconditional positive regard and most of all the life experience and the fact that I’m now on the other side of addiction. I will display as a professional my skills, both in the community and the treatment environment which I work. Role modeling is my favorite and happens to be one of my strengths. One group of researchers from The University of Organ interviewed “five individuals in recovery using a qualitative study and sought to find out in depth the direction their lives were headed after being processed from treatment into recovery living life on life terms”. They found that all fiver was working in the field of Behavior Health and they were all honored to give back what was freely given to them. It was some minor discussion surrounding how much working in the field helped increase their awareness and how they were able to sustain their personal recovery (Fisher, Manoogian, & Hoover, 2016). Overall, this article was good and it provided the necessary information to support how my personal experience and professional experience would contribute to helping
The purpose of this program evaluation is to determine whether the treatment currently being provided to the clients at a mental health agency for alcohol and substance abuse are producing the desired positive outcomes in their clients. Therefore, the stakeholders within the agency wants to confirm the treatment they are providing their clientele is benefitting the clients in the long term. The agency would like to expand their services but before implementing new services the stakeholders are wanting to verify the current services provided are effective. Therefore, the evaluation team will be conducting a context evaluation
