Research (McMillan, pg.5) Book Definition: “a systematic process of gathering, interpreting, and reporting information.” Technical Definition in my words: a recognized and orderly manner of obtaining data and organizing, analyzing and explaining the data so others can understand it and base decisions on it. Example: The survey provided a voluminous amount of data that was only useful after effective research efforts were performed to make it meaningful. 2. Quantitative (McMillan, pg. 11) Book Definition: “emphasizes numbers, measurements, deductive logic, control, and experiments. Studies objectively with goal of obtaining a single true reality, emphasis on measurement” Technical Definition in my words: something that is able to be measured; signifying a measurement. Example: The quantitative research show that there is a direct relationship between the number of hours 4th grade students spend practicing times tables and multiplication test scores. 3. Hypotheses (McMillan, pg. 47) Book Definition: “educated guesses or tentative expectations about a correct solution to a problem” Technical Definition in my own words: an individual’s or group’s expected result of a research study. Example: The hypothesis stated that adult ESOL students would learn more in a classroom that used group learning methods versus a classroom that was purely lecture based. 4.
