A time I will never forget It was winter 2010and the weather was bad. The snow was knee deep and still falling. I was at work and sitting at the reception desk. It had been such a busy night with people checking in and people coming off the street looking for somewhere to stay. A woman came in to the reception area with her three kids. Straight away I could tell she was a gypsy traveller, the way she spoke and looked. She went on to tell me that she needed a room for the night as she was going to a women’s refuge and was scared to drive anymore in the snow. No sooner had he got downstairs then the fire alarm started going off in that zone. The fire brigade left. We headed through to the kitchen for a coffee. We were certain they had set it off deliberately to get their money back. By this time it was 2 o’clock in the morning and I was up at six. I went back up to bed to get some sleep. When I got there all I could think about was what had just happened. It all seemed like a dream. Before I knew it the alarm was going off and it was time to get up. I headed down to the desk to wait on the guests from room 9 to show face. Eventually after breakfast the mother appeared looking for her money back. Trying to hold back the rage, I told her the alarm was set of deliberately. I then went on to tell her that the police had been called to deal with it as it was all on CCTV. Her face was a picture, she rounded up her kids and off they went. No sooner of them going up-stair they were back down checking out. When the police arrived they were long gone. They checked their details that were on the booking which turned out to be false and they had no way of tracing them. Looking back on it, it was one of the most terrifying experiences of my life to be woken up by a fire alarm. I don’t think the realised how serious and dangerous their actions were. They could have set the whole place on fire and all for their money back. I don’t think they will be trying that in any other hotel again! It has also made
