Introduction
Alexis Wineman the first woman with ASD to participate in the Miss America competition. While Alexis was in middle school she was diagnosed with PDD-NOS which is a form of ASD. She felt different at an early age, and only struggled more as she got older. As she got older she had to overcome the challenges that came with having ASD, such as: communication problems, speech impediments, sensitivity to loud sounds, and other sensory-related issues. Bullying was also a problem because of her differences, luckily her family has been a source of strength and inspiration for her(CDC).
Definition
Simple definition of Autism- a condition that begins in childhood and that causes problems in forming relationships and in communicating with other people. Full definition of ASD- a variable developmental disorder that appears by age 3. Is characterized by impairment of ability to form social relationships and communicate with others. Medical definition of ASD- is variable in expression but is diagnosed by impairment of the ability to form normal social relationships. Have impairment of the ability to communicate with others. Also have stereotyped behavior patterns with repetitive activities of restricted focus (“Merriam-Webster”). ASD is not something people can tell just by taking a look. Scientifically, autism and autism spectrum disorder, also known as ASD, are commonly used names for difficult disorders that have to do with brain development. Disorders like these are grouped by someone’s difficulty in social interaction, repetitive behaviors, and nonverbal communication. To the people who are diagnosed with this disorder and the families it affects; it is so much more than just science.
Autism: It is a complex neuro – behavioral condition which is characterized by difficulty in communicating, forming relationships, usage of language, basic social skills, understanding concepts, repetitive behavior etc. Also, called ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) the severity or the degree of the same may vary from an individual to an individual. Autism may be summed up as a developmental disability manifesting itself during the first 3 years of a person’s life. It may be relevant to mention that NO two individuals with Autism will have exactly the same symptoms – would range from mild to severe.

Individuals afflicted by autism can have a range of development problems from mild to severe. Unlike some other conditions, no two cases of autism spectrum disorder are the same.

There is one person/ assistant professor in the university of of Adelphi he has an ASD and there is an interview where he explains how hard it was for him to get where he wanted to be and now he is an renowned advocate with a doctoral degree and is working as an assistant professor. Isn’t that amazing how people with ASD’s can still be very successful even though they may have some limitations. Sometimes jobs open up for people with ASD’s and when they do employees with an ASD are likely to be seen by their coworkers as different or weird. The people that are employed and have ASD’s might sometimes avoid eye contact or they may talk too loudly or ask too many questions. Sometimes they come across as awkward with the society, possibly even rude. Sometimes they may say things that may sound rude to other people since they don’t think it is wrong they may just say it because they don’t know what is good to ask and what is not.. They may be unusually focused on topics and talk on and on about these, not recognizing when others have lost interest. They may be rather literal and have difficulty understanding idioms and certain humor, particularly sarcasm. Which then may lead to aggressively or anxiety and make them mad

ASD and Autism are both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development (What Is Autism, n.d.). Prior to 2013, patients could be diagnosed under Autistic Disorder (AD), Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD), Asperger’s Syndrome (AS) or Childhood Disintegrative Disorder (CDD). In 2013, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) merged all Autism Disorders under one umbrella termed ASD so that it will improve the diagnosis of ASD without limiting the sensitivity of the criteria or substantially changing the number of children being diagnosed. (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).

Intellectual disability is characterized limited intellectual function and adaptive behavior in everyday practical and social skills, thus autism is an intellectual disability (HHSO, 2014).
