Answer: Writing Assignment #1 1. "A Wagner Matinee" by Willa Cather is a short story that was first published in February 1904; this story is about a young man from Boston named Clark who is expecting the arrival of his Aunt Georgiana from the state of Nebraska to settle an estate. Georgiana was originally from Boston when Clark was very young but, she moved to Nebraska with a man ten years her senior to get married and live in his homestead. Before her move, she introduced Clark to the theater and many other things you can only find in a big city like Boston; when she returned Clark took her back to the theater to show her everything she used to love, she came to a hard realization after watching the show that she didn't want to return to the homestead in Nebraska, hating the life …show more content…
"A Wagner Matinee" shares many of the same themes as "My Antonia" like highlighting the hardships of the pioneer life and the impact of music on the human soul. The settings are somewhat of the same by describing Nebraska and the time periods. There are many quotes from each of these great works that reinforce this e.g: “Don't love it so well, Clark, or it may be taken from you. Oh, dear boy, pray that whatever your sacrifice may be, it be not that.” -"A Wagner Matinee. "Down to the kitchen" struck me as curious; it was always "out in the kitchen" at home.- "My Antonia" "The most striking thing about her physiognomy, however, was an incessant twitching of the mouth and eyebrows, a form of nervous disorder resulting from isolation and monotony, and from frequent physical suffering." -"A Wagner Matinee". Cather seems to admire these themes of female hardship and suffering so much that it inspired both of these works. Willa Cather was determined to highlight these hardships that women have faced
Have you ever wondered what it would be like if there was more meaning behind the song Waltzing Matilda? No, well there is. It may not be true but it definitely got me interested. Jackie French, an Australian author, wrote the book A waltz for Matilda. While reading the book you discover a story of a young girl who soon becomes an orphan in the desert country of Australia. Her name is Matilda. Matilda wasn't always alone she had her Parents and her Aunt Ann, but one year that all changed. Her family soon vanishes from this world to another. As you continue to read the story you uncover many stories and you start to feel like you're a shadow that's always behind the characters, you're watching the story play out. Matilda was a young girl who grew up to help change a nation in which we could all live in as equals.
A reader can gain much knowledge from just one book. Willa cather is an amazing authors that can transform the way you think , and your outlook on the subject. Williams states, “ The early years of young Willa's life left a memorable impression on her and formed the basis for many of her stories and characters. The Cathers travelled west across six states landing in Nebraska, Webster county, in 1883 to live at her paternal grandfather's farm” In “My Antonia” by Willa Cather, is one of America’s great love stories. Her main characters face challenges but yet still find a way to live. Also by Willa Cather, “A Wagner Matinee” is also a very informational text. In this piece, A woman leaves her home and sees what she is missing in life. SHe realises the grass is greener on the other side, and never wants to go back. The three things that I learned about the West from Willa Cather's “My Antonia” and “A Wagner Matinee” are beauty is in the eye of the beholder, change is a good thing, and love is eternal.

The story My Antonia is very similar to the poem A Wagner Matinee. They both have a sense of an older story, or of an old book. They both seem like they are stories that have been told for a long time now. Both have settings in the plains and in the west. Both have farm lands in the settings as well. My Antonia to me was a bit of a sad story that had a good ending. A Wagner Matinee to me had an all-around sad story but ended a bit happier than most of the story. Both stories have relatives with some hardships which have brought up some unfortunate situations. Both stories are mostly about time passing and family. What you do with your family while you have it is very important and seems to be the theme in both of these stories to me. I think
Today, I am seeing “Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella”, starring Brandy and Whitney Houston. I am viewing this in M.O.T Charter High School’s theater classroom. I am seeing this with my fellow theater classmates. Although I have seen this film before , I am very thrilled to hear Whitney Houston and Brandy sing “Impossible/It’s Possible”! The three elements I am discussing in this piece are costuming, set, and singing.
Swan Lake' was re-choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov in1895, after initially being choreographed by Julius Reisinger in 1877. The musical score was composed by Pytor Tchaikovsky. Swan Lake' was created towards the end of the romantic period, so the culture and style of romanticism was prominent, with glimpses of the beginning of the classical era. Because of this, it contains elements of both eras. Some of the romantic characteristics include the pursuit of the unattainable, romance, fantasy, focus on the female role, gas lighting and simple sets, pointe work, soft and feminine technique for females and the bell tutu. Some of the classical features include the length of the ballet, the classical tutu and more
Oftentimes people have a difficult time connecting with history. They do not see the relevance between something hundreds of years ago and today’s issues. The Broadway musical Hamilton by Lin-Manuel Miranda does a great job of bridging that gap. Many of the issues that were faced in the time period of Alexander Hamilton are also faced in the world today. An example of this is politicians riding the fence on important issues. A main character in the play is criticized greatly for doing this just as people are currently. In Miranda’s Hamilton, characters are faced with issues and are asked to take a stand just as political leaders are today.
A5. There are quite a few similarities between the poem "A Wagner Matinee" and the book "My Antonia". One of them is that they both involve one character seeing another character after a long time. One quote from My Antonia that proves this is "I told Antonia I would come back, but life intervened and it was 20 years before I kept my promise." A quote from "A Wagner Matinee" that proves this is "She questioned me absently about various changes in the city, but she was chiefly concerned that she had forgotten to leave instructions about feeding half-skimmed

The names “Old Testament” and “New Testament” are inherently theological in nature. Because there is a difference distinctly built into giving them different notations, it implies that there are differences between each the Old Testament and the New Testament, whether it is subtle in nature or obvious in nature. To Christians, the difference means that the Old Testament contains dealings between God and the world and even some of the rules made are made irrelevant by the interactions of Christ Jesus with the world. One of the differences between the New Testament and the Old Testament is the way each of the Testaments describe God and God’s nature. The Old Testament describes an angry God, one who only created the world and was obsessed with laws and rules. The New Testament describes a loving God who redeemed the world. The different ways the Old Testament and New Testament describe God and his nature are very much influenced by their perspective of God. By the rules, actions, and laws God made, the early writers of the Old Testament made their judgements about God and wrote those perspectives into the books of the Old Testament. The writers of the Old Testament did the best they could with the information they had and got some things about God right, but also got things wrong. The writers of the New Testament and therefore, Christian believers understand God better.
On the surface, the protagonists of Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour” and Langston Hughes’ “One Friday Morning” are quite different individuals. Mrs. Mallard, the fin de siècle protagonist of “The Story of an Hour,” is a young woman who feels unsatisfied and confined in marriage. On the other hand, the protagonist of “One Friday Morning” is a high-school-aged black girl named Nancy Lee who is excelling both academically and socially in the early twentieth century. However, despite these differences, both plots hold an event that is unexpected but welcomed by their protagonist, which is then followed by a second surprise that is devastating. As the two individuals respond to these occurrences, we see common themes of independence, equality, and hope.
The first story that we will be looking at is The story of an hour. In this short story, a woman by the name of Louise Mallard is the main character, a character who has just received some rather dark and shocking news from her sister. Her husband, Brently, has just been killed in the result of a railroad
In this essay I will be comparing the two short stories “The Story of an Hour” and “The Yellow Wallpaper”. “The Story of an Hour”, written by Kate Chopin, is centered around a woman by the name Louise Mallard and her reaction after being informed of her husbands “death”, On the other hand “The Yellow Wallpaper” Written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman is about Jane, A young, newly married mother who at the time is undergoing care because of her depression. Although both essays have their similarities and differences I will be focusing mainly on the themes of Freedom, Isolation and Oppression. I will also be focusing on how the themes appear within both short stories and do a compare and contrast about the way the themes appear in the two short stories.
One of the most primitive human emotions is fear. In “The Fall of the House of Usher,” Poe left many things unanswered. One of the main things he left out was that The Ushers aren't your ordinary family. They were vampires! Both Roderick and Madeline were suffering the effects of vampirism. “From that chamber and from that mansion, I fled aghast”. The narrator experiences all of the frightening phenomenon of the Usher House as he ‘fled aghast” or ran away while showing signs of terror. All of these phenomenon can only be explained by one thing and that is vampirism.
Write a critical analysis of any aspect of "The Story of an Hour" which you found of interest and significance.
