There is a range of communication technology aids available, including devices known as Voice Output Communication Aids (VOCA) and Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). VOCA are dedicated to communication and may not have any computer functions. AAC devices are either symbol or text based. There are also communication software that can be added to a computer, mobile phone or PDA to enable a person to type what they want to say and play it back so others can hear what was typed.
The non-verbal students had AAC devices that the SLP programed for each of their specific needs. The student that the SLP was working with had Cerebral Palsy. The student had stuff, tight muscle tone, was not able to walk, was unable to speak and had an intellectual impairment. Although the student was unable to speak, his AAC device spoke for him. The student could touch a button on the screen that would tell the SLP how he was feeling or what he needed. During the session with the non-verbal students, the Physical Therapist and the Occupational Therapist had the student in wheel chairs moving in standers to stretch out their muscles and increase circulation. While the students were in standers, the SLP worked with them and their AAC devices.
As you all know, getting a head start in life is not an easy task. Obstacles are notorious for popping up when we least expect and even when we are utterly unprepared. Often at times, I have overheard my fellow students asking, "why do we need school?" The answer I have personally come up with is that school is and was designed to prepare students for the real world. A large portion of students of Selinsgrove Area High School, myself included, do not have access to Driver Educational classes, or commonly known as Driver's Ed. The reason I bring this up is that if the purpose of school is to prepare oneself for adulthood and one of the vital necessities a young adult must be acquainted with is the ability to drive an automobile, then why is Driver's Ed not a given class here?

I learned so much from this course, which I did not even know I could learn so much about driving in four hours! Imagine having a loved one get in a fatal car accident caused by another driver. Elderly drivers are an extreme priority in America today. Not only are elders challenged with psychological damage, but they also struggle with the physical effects people face as they grow older. A debated topic going on is whether or not elderly drivers should be required to reapply for their drivers licenses. However, it is evident elderly people should be required with their struggle of vision, hearing, and reaction time.
Dangerous driving habits result in the death of thousands of people each year; however, by taking steps to educate young drivers on dangerous habits behind the wheel; countless lives could be saved.

Laws must be put into action to mandate and administer testing and re-examining of the skills and eligibility of this group.
