In a recent event, one of the High Schools in El Dorado County encountered a tragic event which exposed the fact that many of the school football team players were reportedly taking illegally purchased Adderall and using it to enhance their performance (Dillion, 2015). The team had just finished playing a game when two of the school's junior varsity football team running backs lost consciousness and collapsed (Dillion, 2015). One boy was transported by ambulance and the second boy was very critical and was transported by Life Flight and underwent brain surgery for a blood clot that caused bleeding on the brain (Dillion, 2015).
After the players collapsed, an investigation began after some students reported that student athletes may have taken Adderall, a prescription drug used to treat ADHD (Dillion, 2015). The medication is known in the sports world as a performance-enhancing drug that increases focus (Dillion, 2015). Health risks associated with taking the medications include “heart-related problems, sudden death in patients who have heart problems or heart defects, stroke and heart attack in adults and increased blood pressure and heart rate,” according to …show more content…

Drug use by parents and/or older siblings, coupled with tolerant parental viewpoints concerning drug usage by young people, can put youth at a greater risk of drug and alcohol use (Yu, 2003). Close parental supervision along with strongly promoted household rules influence and help deter the use of alcohol/drugs among youth (Yu, 2003). 7 million of American adolescents younger than 18 years old have parents that are alcoholics (Yu, 2003).
