How CTE and ALS Can Attack Many people around the world may be familiar with the horrible diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and chronic traumatic encephalopathy, which both are commonly caused from brain trauma. However, what people may not know is that these brain injuries are frequently reoccuring among athletes from collision sports. CTE is a neurodegenerative disease found from multiple head injuries. CTE also follows up in the family of other despairing diseases such as Parkinson's, Huntington's, Alzheimer's, and Dementia. All these diseases are tied together from affecting the brain. Some symptoms these diseases endure are memory loss, confusion, personality changes, problems with focus and organizing thoughts. Most football players or any athletes for that matter get concussions on a daily basis but never realize it could be something much more serious than a bruised body part. Athletes are more than likely to be diagnosed with one of these conditions rather than someone who is not physically involved. Athletes are often diagnosed with ALS and CTE. This is due to the fact that athletes are prone to get head injuries or traumas. According to aans.org, “Sports and recreational activities contribute to about 21 percent of all traumatic brain injuries.” These brain injuries are typically connected with CTE because CTE is caused by repetitive brain trauma. ALS is primarily found in athletes because motor neurons can be damaged through physical activities. According to a study conducted by the CDC, “Authors found 38 percent of their patients with motor neuron diseases had been in varsity athletes.” This implies that physical activities can contribute to weakening the muscles.
