AP English Class Reflection

The five-minute warning bell goes off. I rush to my first class of my junior year, eager to see my classmates, who I was going to spend the rest of the 9 months with. I find myself stumbling into a classroom plastered with decorations of Denzel Washington with a Dr. Seuss book in his hand, a t and college flags galore. My AP English 11 class suddenly seemed so appealing to me. As a beautiful, curly haired short lady stood in front of me and said “Welcome to AP English 11,” I knew that I had found a treasure so much greater than just a pretty classroom. Little did I know, that short lady was going to inspire me throughout my challenge filled second-to-last year of high school.

When I was a young student, my first English professor taught me the alphabet. After one year, he taught me to put those letters together to make words, sentences, and finally paragraphs in essays. During the high school I learn to write short paragraphs, with ought putting in the correct structure .When I moved in America I stared the course of English as a Second Language and I finished with success last year. My professor advise me that when I starts the English 101 my writing it will be more fulfil and more structural. He has right as when I arrived in English 101, I realized there was more to do not just writing words on paper.

My entire life, I have looked forward to math class; it has always made sense to me. Plugging numbers into an equation and solving for x always came easy to me. Outside of school, I enjoy reading. Easily, I could pick up a book and read the entire thing as time just flies by me. The books I don’t like to read are the ones that I am forced to read in a constricted amount of time. Before this year, I’ve never taken an honors English class; I was the smartest one in my CP class. I never challenged myself which is the reason I decided to take AP English. I didn’t put this on my schedule have my transcript look good, or to boost my GPA, I want to become a better writer. In 20 years, the skills I learn throughout this year will be more important

When I was in the second grade we had a new student in our class named Yvonne. Yvonne had recently arrived from Haiti and knew very little English. Due to the fact that she didn’t understand English a whole lot, the other kids in my class thought it would be funny to call her names and bully her. One day we were at electives. Our class was divided into two, some going to Dance others going to Drama. The doors were across from each other so we could see what was happening. I was in Dance, as well as Yvonne. We were practicing our routine for Ciara’s “1, 2 step”. Yvonne was quick to pick up the dance and was amazing at it, which I think made the other kids in our class resent her. Our instructor dismissed us 5 minutes early to pack up our things. I quickly went to my corner and grabbed my backpack. When I looked up I saw a bunch of girls surrounding Yvonne. I remember hearing them calling her names like ‘ugly’ and ‘loser’. I noticed that no one moved to defend her. One of the girls actually pushed her to the ground and took her backpack dumping all her things on the floor; that’s when I acted. I pushed my way through the girls and placed myself in front of Yvonne. I grabbed her backpack out of the girl’s hand pushed her and called her a ‘mean witch for making fun of Yvonne’. After taking honors English for the past three school years, I now want the challenge of taking a higher level course: AP literature and composition. At this point in my high-school career, I’ve been able to take three advanced classes, and I want this class on my belt as well.

This portfolio will show you the turmoil’s of my year in 9th grade English Honors. My assignments shown in this portfolio have been very mediocre and show the many mistakes I have made throughout. I have constantly had errors in my MLA formatting and basic grammar. I think that I have these constant errors because I am just not thoroughly proofreading my work. It also reflects on how many errors have escaped my proofreadings’ and I hope to improve this skill in the future. I have also had a lot of problems with analyzing texts and making through commentaries. Like my proofreading skills, I strive to really improve and strengthen my disadvantages. Strengthening these skills will greatly benefit me in the future if I shall take AP English 11

The grade that I think that I should receive for the first semester of AP Seminar is an A. I believe that I should get an A for multiple reasons, such as I complete all my work, I have always given my full effort throughout the class, and I work well in group scenarios. Throughout the first semester, I consistently finish my assignments. While we were doing the practice PT1 I had finished the individual research report and the drafts that went along with it on time. Additionally, I found and read research to help myself prepare for the socratic seminar. During the course of the class I have constantly completed my tasks to the best of my ability. The beginning of my junior year seems like it was such a long time ago. This may be because of how much I have grown since the start of the year. When I began AP English, my writing skills needed improvement. For instance, I often used incorrect grammar and struggled with staying on topic. In just one semester, my writing has improved immensely. The more than I write, the more I learn about how to craft a good paper. I have worked on improving my grammar, using rhetoric, addressing my subject, and many more elements of writing. In addition to improving my writing, I have gained many skills to become a better student. I have learned about effective study techniques and time-management skills that allow me to be the most successful. Since I always try my best, I know that over time I will continue to grow in my studies. This year I have gained countless skills that will help me succeed in English in the future.

Senior english class had taught me so much more than any of my other english classes. I feel like that this class really prepared me for who I am going to need to know for college considering I was going to be writing tons of papers. I think that if I would have taken this class this year than I would've been behind next year at UC. I am going into a science major so I think that when we did the assignment that compared the different formats like APA and MLA that really helped me. This class was not to stressful unless I began to slack and waited too the last minute too start writing my paper. Overall I really enjoyed this class and glad I got the credit for a college class.

My students take the AP Literature and Composition Exam; I have taught the course for four years. The year before I started, student were hand-selected for AP Literature and Composition, and only 9 of 26 students earned qualifying scores (3's or higher). My first year we had just shifted to open enrollment and nearly half of my 50 students were not honors or hand-picked students. Still, our passing percentage inched up from 34 to 36 percent. Numbers keep increasing--I have 70 this year--but our passing percentages are holding steady or increasing slightly, more students overall are earning qualifying scores and,most importantly, more students have access to rigorous coursework that will better prepare them for college whether or not they "pass"

I have always found that it is far better to be controversial than boring; thus, my English 204 class would promote debates about societies most heated issues. Predominately, a lot of students enter college adhered to the values instilled by their parents. I find this to be rather toxic because it suppresses one’s individuality. My lectures would be a physical release from society’s grasp and would allow students to truly explore themselves. I think an important aspect of education is the ability to establish a clear position after researching both sides. Therefore, for one of the assignments, I would pick a controversial topic like abortion, religion, or politics—and have the students write a brief response establishing their position. Then,

During my time as a student, I have taken part in a broad spectrum of English classes. Some of these classes have been a delightful experience, and others have been subpar. The most recent class that I was in was one that I would categorize as the second of the two. The last English class that I was in was enrolled in was English II. The class itself was not entirely misfortunate, and had identifiable high points; however, it just was not a class that I would describe as fulfilling. In this class, I experienced one of the worst moments of my life, discovered a weakness that was holding me back, and also experienced one of the best days of my high school career.

Throughout this semester in English 101, I have made a significant improvement on multiple things, including how to be an exceptional writer and thinker. English has always been one of my most favored subjects to study because to me it instructs students how to be intelligent, how to become a more creative and critical thinker, and be able to develop ethical values and imagination. You can express yourself more efficiently in English than you can in any other subject. This class has truly made me a more confident writer and helped me express myself in different ways through the different types of papers I wrote. I feel as if my previous class helped prepare me for the real world. The real world does not come with an instruction manual or tell you how certain tasks should be performed in life. My last English class helped further my knowledge by challenging me and allowing me to learn on my own. These challenges helped me learn how to be more independent as a student and grow as a person. Another high point from my last class would be that we got to do partner narrative essays, which consisted of two people having to agree on one topic and work together for the best grade. This taught us compromise and communication skills which are a necessity in order to be successful in life. I can remember seeing that I had to take an English class my first semester of college. I was already overwhelmed with starting college, and having to write college essays made me get even more nervous. I sat down with my mom and decided to look at the English classes available, and I finally decided that I had to take an evening class to make it work in my schedule. The first day of English came and now looking back it was not as bad as I thought. It made me a better writer and be where I am today. It may have taken me some time to get where I am today, but at least I am on the right track. English Composition helped me realize that I am my own author and have strengths that I did not realize I had.
