The 16 yo F who died by suicide in Elizabethtown over the weekend was not the pt at our clinic.
It was brought to my attention at the NE Drive that thestaff members working with children including nurses residents and therapists seem to be under stress bc of all this -it is a third teenager for the past few months who died and we are asked by pts about it all the time.
This is not my area and I am not sure if we can afford on line or in person training workshop for all of us how to talk about it and approach it not for the community but for the staff. I will leave that to you just wanted to give you update.
This is not my area of expertise and Dr Hameed might know better programs but program recommended to us in Barcelona was

I finally started my first year of college at Miami Dade College in January 2014. During my adaptation to the new educational system, my Abnormal Psychology class professor mentioned how important it would be to participate in an Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training. I consider this to be very useful in today’s society where many individuals suffer from depression.
Imagine, the entire province of New Brunswick committing suicide. That is approximately how many people take their own lives over the course of a year. Suicide: a word that has become mum in our society for fear of offence. However, looking at it in a sociological view proves it less personal for many. Suicide is a multi-faceted, prevalent issue engulfing and affecting many today.
1. The exposition of this poem is when he goes to the river and tries to kill himself. It’s clear that the man is full of spirit and is currently facing some sort of personal problem that makes him want to commit suicide. When he tries to jump, he doesn’t “sink like a stone” he keeps rising to the surface and the cold water clears his mind and will not allow him to die.
There are several theories that attempt to understand suicide, such as Durkheim’s Sociological Theory of Suicide and Shneidman’s Theory of Suicide as Psychache. However, one of the newest and most well known theories is Joiner’s Interpersonal Theory of Suicide. The goal of this theory is to understand suicide at an interpersonal level. More specifically, it evaluates why individuals engage in suicidal behavior and identifies individuals who are at risk for engaging in such behaviors. There are three main components of Joiner’s theory, including thwarted belongingness, perceived burdensomeness, and acquired capability.
Using material from Item A and elsewhere, assess different sociological explanations of suicide. (21 marks)
Suicide is the act of killing yourself. It is the 11th leading cause of death in America (CDC 2009). I have never had any intentions on committing suicide and I never really understood why people commit suicide that’s why I chose this topic to help me understand what problems people go through that makes them do such a thing. Sociology is the study of social behavior and the culture of humans. There are numerous reasons like financial stress, family problems or mental health disorders that lead to suicide. The number one cause of suicide is untreated depression. The issues that were just listed are some social conditions from society that results in a suicidal
Hagan, C. R., Podlogar, M. C., and Joiner, T. E. (2015) bring about a topic that has many individuals’ attention, mass murder and amok. However, taking the topic into a new light and applying it to the coined phrase suicide by cop. Hagan, Podlogar and Joiner all suggest I different perspective on mass murder and amok by stating how the main goal for the perpetrator is their wish to die. Which brings them to an important topic of how these cases of extreme violence is driven by suicidal urges. Furthermore is connection between mass murder and violent suicide characteristics. Similarly most were male, as well as having some underlying mental disorder like psychotic disorder or substance abuse. Moreover the Authors equated how in many mass murder
Influenza a running rampant through the hospital and I am not a fan of having to wear a gown, mask and gloves. It feels like such a barrier when communicating with the patients. I just cringe whenever I see the droplet precautions on the patient’s chart. I really cannot wait for this flu season to pass, especially since we lost a 10-year-old to the flu today. It is always sad when someone dies, but there is such a noticeable effect throughout the entire hospital when a child passes away. On the other hand, it is in these moments you really get to witness the tight bond between the staff members. The other social workers offered a lot of support to the social worker directly involved and the chaplains, doctors, and nurses really rally
Traditionally, suicide was thought to be a purely individual decision but French sociologist Emile Durkheim recognized that the phenomenon had a social dimension. He believed in the influence of society on the individual and that if anything can explain that relation, it is suicide. His use of the data of suicide, not specific cases and reports, to study the societal trends reveals his true subject of study: society as a whole and its role in the individual experience. Durkheim uses the study of suicide via the quantitative methodological approach as a tool to study society as a broader whole.
The first article, “Predicting moral sentiment towards physician-assisted suicide: The role of religion, conservatism, authoritarianism, and Big Five personality,” studies, as mentioned in the title, the effect religion and religiosity, political beliefs, authoritarianism, and the big five personality traits have on people's attitude towards doctor assisted suicide. The big five personality traits are extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, emotional stability/neuroticism, and openness. The theoretical framework used in this article was based on previous research that identified psychosocial predictors of feelings towards physician assisted suicide. They believe that religiosity correlates to negative opinions on physician assisted
Most knowledge that doesn’t seem to be taught but inherently known comes from passed down genetically from generation to generation. One of which is suicide, which does not seem like something that would help the survival of the people who pass it down but it may be about the greater good. In this paper I discuss the evolutionary benefits of suicide for the human population. These include such things as strengthening the will to live in those that survive less competition for resources, and support from those who went through the suffering, and that maybe suicide is a remnant of the survival of the fittest biological drive that propelled humans foreward. In this literature review the following will be discussed, is suicide an evolutionary trait, what “good” it might have done for the human race, and are the benefits still viable or has it become a vestigial evolutionary characteristic.
Act Utilitarian is defined as, an action becoming morally right when it produces the greatest good for the greatest number of people. So, my question is, how do you apply this doctrine to a sensitive topic like suicide, curiosity pulled me into this subject matter and I am sure some of you may be pondering this also. Before I dove too deep and wondered around aimlessly, I decided to ask myself one question that would help aid me to conclude an understanding if any, is even possible to apply this form of ethics into this topic.
Durkheim’s Theory of suicide has received a wide range of criticism from various sources. It has actually been criticized as the perfect example of logical error, which is commonly termed as ‘ecological fallacy’. The conclusions given by Durkheim on personal behavior on the basis of aggregate statistics have been termed as misleading. This is because the Simpson’s (1987) paradox had revealed how erroneous it is to analyze the micro events in macro properties terms. Nevertheless, diverging views have arisen on whether the work by Durkheim should actually be classified as ecological fallacy or not. Suicide rates differences between different religious groups (such as the Catholics alongside the Protestants) could be entirely explained in terms of how the social groups categorized deaths. For example, while the Protestants recorded “sudden deaths” alongside “deaths resulting from unspecified causes” as suicides, this was not the case on the Catholics side. Thereby, Durkheim error would be considered as empirical other than logical. Few researchers such as Gibbs, Inkeles, alongside Johnson have claimed
“Don’t move”, a gun pointed my friend and me at a night that I might not forget. That night, my best girl friend who came from Columbia went through a big change in her life because she suffered from a sexual assault. I finished the SMU questionnaire about sexual problem in few days ago. Actually I had either sad or little delight because assigning a questionnaire to students means that a collage pays high attention to students’ sexual problems. However, I felt sad because I recalled my girlfriend’s sexual assault again. No matter how old the women is, there is no doubt that she or her family or friends were influenced a lot by sexual assault. Also, I was impacted by my friend’s sexual assault so I got warnings and some ideas after that. In order to avoid sexual assault, everyone had better pay attention to her safety and not have prejudices against someone who suffered from sexual assault.
