The most important experience that has positively impacted my academic performance is being in AVID for the past 5 years. AVID is an acronym that stands for advancement via individual determination, a college preparatory class that helps prepare you for college, get organized, and set goals. I have been enrolled in AVID since 8th grade learning how to become a better student, improving study skills and the way I communicate with the students and teachers around me. I have learned how to ask better questions and to talk to my teachers when I need help or do not understand the concept well. I make sure that I have a relationship with my teachers and introduce myself at the beginning of each semester. Learning how to communicate with my teachers
Over the course of this semester, I have spent an ample amount of time serving as a mentor with Gonzaga’s Center for Community Engagement Youth Program, Campus Kids. In Campus Kids, we develop one-on-one relationships with mentees between the 4th-6th grades to assist them in succeeding academically, socially, and emotionally. Every Thursday afternoon at 3:10 PM, each of the Campus Kids mentors in our group meet up in the Center for Community Engagement in the basement of the Hemmingson Center. We spend this time doing icebreaker activities with the other mentors to get to know each other while we wait for our mentees to arrive in their school bus from the local Garfield Elementary in Spokane, WA. From 3:30-5:00 PM, we spend one-on-one time with our mentees where we engage in a variety of different activities such as playing educational games, working on homework together, sharing a healthy snack, talking about the activities we have done the past week, and exercising outside. In addition to meeting with my mentee every Thursday, I also ride in a carpool with 3 other mentors to Garfield Elementary every Friday from 11:00 AM-12:00 PM for a school visit where I get to sit in on my mentees’ PE class and provide support and encouragement for him as he works on developing his physical education. In this class, I help him out if he’s having difficulty understanding what his teachers are asking him to do, or I will help count the number of push-ups or sit-ups he has trying to reach
My time spent in the Clinical setting, so far, has been extremely inciteful as to how to become a better educator in a classroom setting. Through the data I collected I was able to connect Borich’s Seven Variables of learning to the students. By being in the clinical setting for nearly two months, I have been exposed to new ways of thinking when it comes to structuring a classroom and instructing a classroom. Within this reflection you will find out how I would better plan an effective lesson for the pupils in my future classroom. You will also discover what I will do about certain issues in the classroom and how I will address/fix them.

Hello, I am Anahi Ceballos-Tapia and I am currently 13 years old. When I’ve first heard about the AVID program, I was very skeptical about what this program benefits. After asking which program would suit me the best for my future education, I’ve chosen to participate in this particular program. I feel that I have the skills and determination to have this course in Everett Alvarez High School. Therefore, I would like to be enrolled in AVID for various reasons. My foremost reason on why I want to be enrolled in AVID program is considering that it will help me tremendously on my academics in school, which would apply to helping me learn how to be successful all the way through college. Secondly, I would like to be in AVID since this class can
I learned that if I put a little more effort than I usually do then I could see a huge increase in performance and my grades. I learned that if I really pay attention to the directions that were given to me when they are given, it is a much easier time in the class. Also if I do not understand something, just asking someone next to me or the teacher or even a teacher's aid really helps so I fully understand the instructions
Avid is a class on campus that is meant to prepare students to go to college. Avid teaches students to keep organized schoolwork and how to take good class notes. Avid students can get extra help with their schoolwork, which can help the student’s GPA. The Avid teachers are Mrs. Vivanco, Mr. Browning, and Ms. Chappel. Ms. Chappel is a first-year Avid teacher, and has the pleasure to teach the new Avid freshman. Mrs. Vivanco teaches the juniors and seniors, and helps them apply for college. The Avid teachers help their students stay on task and maintain good grades. Avid has been working hard to come together as a club. Some Avid Club activities are college field trips, picnics, Christmas party and making a float for the Homecoming parade. Avid
As a student who guides herself and provides her own backbone to her aspirations, I would not have believed an academic program like AVID would have given me a significant support system that would direct me to the path of fundamental success. I discovered AVID through their recruitment event for incoming high school freshmen. I learned that the program aimed to help students achieve their goals of attending a four year university through mentoring and an enhanced education. Being a first generation student, I was interested in joining the program in seek of the benefits I could acquire to a quality education. When I joined the program, I learned that I gained more than what I had expected. AVID provided me with academic skills I needed to
I have choose two focus students who reflect different learning needs and will have modified assessments. Focus student number one is a five year old child with a bilateral hearing loss, pulled out for individualized services. The child spends the majority of his time in a general education environment. He will benefit from being asked leading questions before he picks his category. This modification is being made for focus student one. Focus student two is a five year old child with a unilateral hearing loss and Down syndrome. The child is in an inclusive environment with a full time paraprofessional for a small part of the day and spends the remainder of time in a special education classroom. The child’s preferred method of communication
The first semester in 9th grade is usually very challenging and difficult to go through for many of us. Taking AVID as a freshman was also a challenging experiment to go through. From taking notes in all core classes, doing weekly reflections (D.L.L.), getting grade checks signed, organizing my binder, turing in all my assignments on time, I felt very overwhelmed at first. During the transition from a middle schooler to a high schooler, I felt pressured, but as I moved continued, I finally got into the habit of doing my work and turning them in on time. In my first semester as a freshman AVID student, I have improved in many different areas. Putting effort and time into the works I have done, I feel very accomplished.
AVID pushes students to try harder in order to achieve the best they can. Thus, AVID will help support students
“Quero que meus netos para ter sucesso e ser feliz e viver a vida,” my grandma told me, this means she wants her grandchildren to be successful and be happy and live life. This makes me want to succeed in school and just succeed in everything. The person who introduced avid to me was my older brother, Anthony. He is in a state university, so seeing that he got there because of avid makes me notice that avid is a great program. When I transitioned from 8th grade avid to freshmen year avid it was very different. I thought the binder checks, the essays, and the tutor was a waste of time but now I realize it is not. Avid is a program not to just get ready for college but to life goals. Avid teachers are not just teacher, like are more, as like a friend but also a teacher's. My avid

It was once said by Colin Powell that “ there are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure”. Avid has given me the base I need to succeed in high school . I believe that avid has helped me a lot through my freshman year of high school. To begin avid has helped me by keeping me organized and staying on track . Next avid has taught me how to work through challenging problems that I had in school . Finally avid has helped push me to go a college in the near future . Avid has demonstrated to me that I can and will succeed through high school .
First off, I'd like to ask, What is AVID? For outsiders, they believe it is just a college prep class. In some ways it is, but there is so much more to this class. Where teachers help us gain unique study skills that bring us the ability to do better in school. They also provide a friendly environment that helps us to gain better knowledge. They also help us build a career and set goals for our future.
