Argumentative and alternative communication systems (AACs) are interventions for students with severe communication impairments, such as autism spectrum disorders and other severe disabilities. In addition, the case of autism disorders will be used to represent severe communication impairments while providing guidelines in how to prepare teachers to be able to use the picture exchange communication system (PECS) as an example AACs. The PECS and other methods of AAC have gained popularity in their usage to improve the communication capabilities of children with significant communication impairments. However, it difficult to use PECS and other methods of AAC to improve the communication skills of the children without preparing and supporting. The content include four areas which special education teachers should be knowledgeable about when teach students with severe communication impairments and who are in need for AACs. First will outline characteristics and needs of the students and then secondly, will provide guidelines on how to asses and identify an appropriate method of AACs to use with an individual student. Also, beliefs and perspectives are important for using or applying any kind of augmentative and alternative communication systems (AAC), PECS as an example in teaching students with severe communication impairments.
