Abe Lincoln's Legacy

It is hard not to agree with David Herbert Donald in his biography of Abraham Lincoln. He does his best to not give his professional opinion of anything and only writes about the topics from which he has proof of. The main ideas that the author has throughout the text is greatly supported with Lincoln’s own papers and from written first-hand accounts of his generation. Donald accounts for the changes of position on slavery and the equality of blacks throughout his presidency. I think that this book is a great depiction of Abrahams Lincoln’s life.

Hofstadter is an author who criticizes many historians. In the book, “In The American Political Tradition” Hofstadter does nothing but criticize different historians. One particular historian he challenges in his writings is Abraham Lincoln. According to Hofstadter, Abraham Lincoln was “the exemplar of the self-made man,” he was a very humble man that easily pleased the people and easily attained very high political ranking, as well as success and a lot of power. Abraham Lincoln’s flaws as a president were often overlooked because many Americans felt as if he brought to life what is known to be the great American dream. Abraham Lincoln, Civil Rights Activist, U.S. Representative, U.S. President, and lawyer is regarded as one of America’s most successful presidents due to his incredible impact on the nation, and his views on slavery and civil rights. Abraham Lincoln, also referred to by Honest Abe, had one of the hardest jobs a president can have and that is being a war-time leader. Despite the odds, Lincoln persevered through his rough childhood and found his way into politics and later became one of America’s greatest and most respected presidents, because of all the countless sacrifices he made for our country.

I will be going through and telling you what happen through the time periods and the months. Through every time period I will tell you every event that goes on during that time period and how long is last. Basically I am giving you a research time lime from event to event.

You have heard of him in every textbook and learned about him in school. Abraham Lincoln made a lasting impact on the United States because he was able to maintain the continuation of the United States. He was a very open minded person and was able to understand both aspects of the War. As a president and Commander in Chief of the United States Army, he was calm under pressure and very generous. He had a lasting impression on the South with his Ten Percent plan and was viewed as a hero for African Americans and rightfully so. Freeing them from chains in the South and giving them the right and responsibilities that every United States citizen would have. Creating a government from ruins, having it destroyed and building it back up again, is something only mentally strong people such as Lincoln could do. Abraham Lincoln rose from humble beginnings to become one of the greatest ever presidents of the United States.

After studying Lincolns life and specifically his time in office, I strongly disagree with Statement 1. This statement not only undermines the president’s major role in the victory, but also overstates the North’s advantage in human and material resources. In fact, many of the advantages that the North did have, were the result of Lincoln’s leadership. Regardless of the North’s advantage in size and resources, Lincoln made several key decisions that helped result in the Union’s victory. During Lincoln’s time in office, his primary concern was the Civil war. As he states several times in his inaugural address, his central conflict consisted of upholding the nation. In order to do so, Lincoln made several strategic decisions and focused on many aspects of the war that were crucial in defeating the Confederacy. Among these important decisions and acts are his response to Fort Sumter, important foreign policy negotiations, and the Emancipation Proclamation.

President Abraham Lincoln was the leader of the United States for five years, yet he is often only remembered for leading the Union to victory in the Civil War and freeing the slaves in the process. These accomplishments go together and it is easy to assume part of, if not the entire reason for war was to end slavery. He is credited with freeing the slaves because of his emancipation proclamation. This eventually brings and end to the institution, but should we really credit this all to Lincoln? Was Lincoln the only one to recognize the moral issues with slavery and destroy it with one single blow? Abraham Lincoln has been called the greatest president in all of American history. His principles were dedicated to the survival of the United States during one of the most gruesome and bloody wars in the country 's history, the American Civil War. During his presidency, he fought for the emancipation of slaves because he believed the institution of slavery was morally unjust. His ideals, which appealed to the founding principles of the country, "energized and mobilized" the union and kept it alive during the long months of the war. His leadership during those months changed the fairly new nation of America for the better.

Every president left behind a legacy,but some stood out more than the others. It took me a very long time to pick just one president I thought was the best. I was debating on if I should do a more modern president like Bill Clinton,or a more older president like Abraham Lincoln. After thinking for quite a while, I decided on President Lincoln. The lecture was given by James Piereson on which he discusses about Abraham Lincoln’s great influence on American history. Piereson mentions how Lincoln’s early life has made him a significant leader that no other president can be compared to him. Lincoln worked on a farm to which he hated doing and by the age of twenty-one he left his home for a more urban and commercial life. Lincoln was self-educated, between the age 6 and 15 he went to school for a total of one year. He was a reader of great books and read mostly English and American literature. Piereson even mentions that Lincoln knew he was living at a time that there were no Founding Father left, so Lincoln spent his time studying on the American Founding. Which meant he spent

Abraham Lincoln is an American legacy that could be considered the best American president for preserving the union of the United States, emancipating slavery, and dying for what he believed in. These accomplishments are unbeaten by another American president.

Abraham Lincoln is known as the sixteenth president of the United States. A self-taught lawyer by trade who was born in a one room cabin in Kentucky, he came from meek beginnings. Mr. Lincoln was only known to have a few years of formal schooling he had to work to help support his family. He moved to the capital of Illinois and practiced as a lawyer. This is where he earned his nick name of Honest Abe. He was known to help the common man. He met and married a woman named Mary Todd. They had four sons. One of which passed away with Typhoid fever. He was shot by John Wilkes Booth in Ford’s theater on April 14, 1865 and died the very from a gunshot to the head. He never lived to see the Union win the war with the plans he helped devise. He next day is known in history for his moving speeches. Two of the main speeches are the Gettysburg Address and the Emancipation Proclamation. Both of these are remembered today as turning points in history. Honest Abe was not only our president but a leader in that he felt like he needed to protect our constitution and the rights it afforded us but also protect the Union. He was a level headed man in a time of war and conflict. He was elected to office when the Union was in a state of unrest due to the issue of slavery. Several states succeeded when he was elected to office. This set up a series of events that lead to the beginning of the civil war. The steps that he took forever changed the history of the United States.
