This was my first time taking GSW 1120, a course in which I learned to successfully develop, examine, communicate and argue a thesis statement, by integrating the learning outcomes identified in the course. The initial assignment asked that we find a book to read and perform a critique that identified a current trend, person or event. Since substance abuse and addiction is one of nation’s fastest growing problems and AA 12-step recovery has been the traditional method of treatment I chose, AA: Not the Only Way: Your One Stop Resource Guide to 12-step Alternatives. Anchorage, Alaska: Capolo Press, 2008, a book written by a woman, Melanie Solomon, who battled addiction for 12 years. Solomon explains in her story that she was addicted to pills,
Over the past couple weeks of this course, I was able to learn about psychodynamic psychoanalytical, humanistic, and cognitive-behavioral theoretical orientations. Taking the questionnaire provided in the text, I could identify which treatment style I aligned with most. At this point in my development, I lean towards thought-focused and action-focused treatment styles. Specifically, the theoretical orientation I am drawn to is cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). I am drawn to cognitive-behavioral therapy because I believe it is effective within the development of goals, therapeutic alliance, and I can easily apply it with my own life and even potential work setting.
Nadia Bolz-Weber is a female pastor that is on her spiritual journey to learn more about herself. She would have never become a great pastor without living through the experiences she went through. When talking about her spiritual journey, she brings up certain concepts that portray who she really is. I could understand and relate to some of her stories. She teaches herself and talks about others things nobody usually thinks of. She brought up many important stories that changed her life and brought her closer to herself. Nadia talks about concepts, such as self, forgiveness, and purpose.
At approximately 0134 Hours, Cortez Dispatch advised me Breback, J. called 911 and hanging up. Cortez further advised that upon call back Breback, J. advised everything was ok for the moment and hung up. Sgt. Minor and I responded back to the residence, upon arriving at the residence we walked from the roadway in the dark watching the residence. The residence had all the first floor lights on and the lights on in the upstairs bedroom. I watched the residence for any signs of Breback, C. being in the residence. The two dogs located at the residence where outside barking at me. I watch Breback, J. move from the living room to the front door of the residence calling the dogs back into the residence. I watched for a short time, I did not see anyone
Upon entering into Barry University (B.U.), I was an insecure black African- American woman full of passion coupled with a myriad misconceptions of what I thought social work consist of. However, during my two years as a undergrad student I learned that those misconceptions had kept me stagnant in facing
The video was very informative in describing how CBT can be used. I have seen CBT used frequently in our programs, however the effectiveness I fear is not as good as the data would have us believe. I think CBT can be used however only with certain clients and cultures. CBT have been criticized for focusing too much on the power of positive thinking, being too techniques oriented, and working to eliminate symptoms but failing to explore the underlying causes of difficulties (Corey, 2013). I work in a community with majority of our clients are African Americans and Hispanic. Most of the clients in the communities are poverty stricken, and have difficult lives. Using CBT which only focus on the now and positive thoughts can be a difficult concept
After touring the campus with the AAT program from SPC, I know in my heart that LCU is where God is calling me to be. I went to a private school until my freshmen year and it was the best thing my parents could have done for me. I loved
The Criminal Justice agency I worked with was the Southeast Texas Applied Forensic Science Facility or STAFS. At this agency, there is a focus on applying forensic science to the human body. There is an additional focus on what can be collected from the evidence that they are provided with. At STAFS, the bodies the scientist work on are donated and are treated with the upmost respect.
Burciaga, Tonimarie Session 1 Journal In this reflection, describe an event or an experience in your life that will influence your academic work and goals at Colorado Christian University.
I know my family has had an effect on who I am as being individual and who I will become a counselor. One reason I feel confident about working in the forensics is that I have thick skin and it is not a lot that I cannot handle. I have learned one’s family can have an effect on them and I am empathic to those who have family struggles whether big or small because it makes a difference. Also, I am aware of how hard it is to break the family cycle and deviate from the negative family traits.
Even though from personal experience I had some knowledge that I was inclined to the CBT theory, the study of the major theories in counseling confirmed this. I had some struggles to understand the deterministic and humanistic approaches. The existentialist approached caught my attention; but CBT was what spoke to me. Focusing on gender equality, behavior or reality can all be integrated within the scope of this theory if the interventions are tweaked and the approach is the same. In my opinion, in order for me to continue learning about this fascinating theory I need to observe someone practice this approach within different settings (in the classroom and in the office office), with different groups (gender, age, race, heritage variance)
On Tuesday 25 Oct 2016 at 3:30 pm, I read Matthew ABC story to the children in Voyager class with Mrs. Ellen Padgett and Mrs. Liz. Before I read the story, I played a song that about A to Z letters to make the children engage with the story. Then, I started reading the story by asking questions about the story like “what do you think the story will be about?” At the beginning, the children seemed interested and excited to listen to the story. One child replied to my question by saying “ABCD” with excited voice. Then, I began to read the story and asked key questions. Some children answered my questions and other seemed thinking.
This week’s reflection paper examines the implementation of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) techniques with a client whom experienced one severe episode of a panic attack. After the hyperventilation demonstration, Dr. Padesky (therapist) should have guided the client through one or two relaxation strategies. I found the demonstration helpful, however, it

I decided to take Pre-AP because I like a challenge, and I like to learn. Reading and writing are not my strong suits, but they are important things to know how to do moving forward in life. I thought this class would be a great opportunity to push myself, not only in the amount of work I will be assigned, but also that I will have to learn how to manage my time wisely. I am eager to see what I can accomplish!
